Question regarding notice

Lad who's been with us for over a year has had guts full of our poorly ran office and management and wants out
He asked me this morning if you have a holiday due which runs into a rotation, is he able to give notice at the start of his holiday and have the rotation week as his notice week? Or does he have to actually work a weeks notice

No, you can give notice on leave.

However doing so can create 2 problems.

If it's annual leave then he may not have accrued enough to actually go on leave for his notice. Our leave year runs Apr to Apr so he would have only accrued 5/12 worth of leave.

If its time off through a 1 in 6 system then he needs to make sure, absolutely sure, that he has accrued enough days for the whole notice period. He may have to check with the book room for that. The problem with 1 in 6 is that sometimes, especially at the start, some days can be worked ahead and some behind. Normally it would all balance out, but because he is quitting he may find he owes them, or even vice-a-versa.

THANKS BTT, I've asked him and he said he has holiday coming up in two weeks which falls into his rotation so will be off for 2weeks, that's when he wanted to put it In
He still has a further 2 weeks holiday booked later in the year so he doesn't owe them I imagine ?

The fact that they are booked I am afraid has no bearing. Leaving early means he won't have as much holiday as if he had stayed the whole year.

If he has had weeks leave during summer he may be tight on how much leave he has left.

For example, Basic Leave entitlement is 4.5 weeks (or for a 5 day week 23 days)

As he will have served only 5/12 of the year he will only be entitled to 9-10 days leave at the moment he hands in his notice.

If he has already used any leave during summer then that needs to taken off as well.
