A postal giant that was run by Royal Mail chief Moya Greene is axing its daily deliveries.

Cash-strapped Canada Post, which Greene headed from 2005 to 2010, will force millions of householders to pick up their letters from community mail centres under proposals that could lead to up to 8,000 job losses.

It is also raising stamp prices by more than a third.

Newly-privatised Royal Mail insists it has no plans to follow suit and the legally binding Universal Service Obligation guarantees six-day-a-week deliveries to every address in the country for the same price.

But the union Unite has its fears. Assistant general secretary Tony Burke said: “If Moya Greene followed the lead of her own country it would be disastrous.”
