Refused lieu day to move house.

The title says it all really, but I'm posting to see the unions view on this?
I put in for the lieu day 3 weeks previous (when my offer was accepted) but was refused for the usual excuses. Above and beyond, too short notice, can't cover your duty. You know the score! What is the point of having lieu days, if they can't be used? It's a losing battle in my office at the moment, even if you find cover you'll more than likely be refused. I have 11 to take, and will probably have to carry those over to next year at this rate!

My issue was resolved by the book room swapping my day off, thankfully. But its still a moot point! Why are we being refused our entitled holiday for no apparent reason? If the book room can cover my duty at the drop of a hat, then all of the DOM"s excuses are invalid!

Your account is disgraceful but not new, it's getting worse for holidays per se let alone lieu days.
CWU/reps/area/DIVS, the fricken lot of them need to pull their finger out over this bollox!

3 years ago I was refused holiday (which I had available) to move house.

I asked for three days . answer; no holiday available.

My answer; I wont be in . Give me the holiday or don't pay me , I don't care.

I repeated this mantra on a daily basis for over two weeks.

I moved house ; I did not go to work ; and they gave me the days as holiday.

At no point was I informed that it was taken as holiday.

And they wonder why I am somewhat reluctant to do them 'favours'

Pathetic way to run a company and motivate staff.

if you have 11 lieu days then it's entirely possible that your manager has been breaking the law.

However, that depends on how much leave allowance you have, and whether all of the 11 days are public holiday carry overs. Even if only some of them are then Royal Mail may have failed in its statutory duty to allow 5.6 weeks leave (which can include BH)

5.6 weeks in Royal Mail is 28 days leave (ignore hours at the moment) even after 15 years service where the basic entitlement is 5 weeks and 1 day, means at least some of the Bank Holidays come under statutory leave.

Basically after all that waffle if you feel strong enough put in a grievance.

I wasn't allowed to book any leave when I moved house, just had to put up with a rest day swap :-(

It's not abandonment of duty. I informed them numerous times that I would not be in.

Take that to any Tribunal and who would win?

Yeah but you still have to meet your contractual obligation, you can't just say I'm not here Wednesday next week, deal with it.

No, what he was saying is that you have a legal right to ask for leave and RM have a right to refuse it. There is no automatic right to leave for moving house. Should there be, that a different discussion entirely?

It is a different discussion indeed.

Maybe I am more miffed that management can be so inflexible and that I have to resort to just saying I wont be in because we are moving house.

I was refused a day off even after giving them 3 months notice.
Quite ironic when the Dom constantly tells me I have to be flexible when I refuse to work over.

'Flexibility' is a euphemism for exploitation.

Moving house is covered under special leave, you are entitled to 1 day without pay though
