Uniform steering group put our new women’s shirts to the test

Image

Two new women’s shirts will be trialled by 500 colleagues across the country, to help us create a uniform to suit all shapes and sizes.

The tops were selected by our uniform steering group, which includes female drivers and postwomen, alongside designers from Dimensions, our uniform supplier.

The group chose the shirts from nine prototypes. Their decision was based on feedback gathered from this year’s Employee Survey, the Big Conversation and women’s networking events earlier this year.

The favourites were a long-sleeved shirt and a short-sleeved ‘sholo’ – a blend of a polo and a shirt which looks smart, while allowing flexibility of movement. Both tops are semi-fitted with two pockets.

Carol Bolland, national asset supply chain manager, said: ‘Women are a key part of our workforce, so we need to adapt our uniform to reflect that.

‘We’ve considered everything, including fit, fabric, neckline, pockets, length of sleeves and type of buttons. It needs to suit a range of people and the jobs they do, while still fitting in with our brand identity.’

The two styles of top will be sent to a selection of mail centres, distribution centres and delivery offices to be sampled by female colleagues in a range of different roles.

Watch our video below to see the uniform steering group checking out the potential range of new shirts.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

The Sholo looks alright. But it will be nice to also have a light-weight cotton t-shirt for the summer.

How about just a normal t-shirt, not a polo shirt and we could do with a jumper and wet bottoms that aren't 45ft wide

Although perhaps a collar is better for sun protection (he says, having been sheltering from the rain all day on his day off..... )

Those sholos do look good though. Will the polos for chaps be getting changed in the future? A pocket for pens etc would be handy!

I hope we can choose to stick with the pale blue unisex ones - if you want a fitted, dark-coloured top you already have the option of the red polo shirts. I'm happy with the nice loose fitting, light-colour shirts. :nervous

So all thing being equal, when can we see trials of male shirts. The asset manager clearly states at the beginning, "the top we supply is unisex, so it's not designed to be male or female, it's designed just to fit both". While we're at it, how about an option for longer sleeves on the long sleeve shirts instead of wearing the next size up shirt. Or maybe some shorts that are actually shorts and not 3/4 length with the pockets below the knee. Oh, and some left-handed P739 cards too.

For us taller chaps, the shorts are almost like hot pants

I agree with you on this,I've not got the smallest body & having a fitted shirt would look shocking on me & also I like to wash my blue shirts on a fairly hot wash as they do get filthy but putting a red shirt on a hot wash would probably soon turn dark pink.
