Long term sick.

Post by Alexei »

My union rep is abroad on annual leave, colleague has came to me for advice as i am clued up with a lot of info, but this escapes me.

Suffering with plantar fasciitis, she had a few days off, then contacted a doctor via telephone. Doctor diagnosed over phone ( didn't deem it nescessary to arrange an appointment ) has prescribed anti inflammatories, and provided a sick note for two weeks ( which someone has collected from the surgery on her behalf).
My understanding of the situation was that it's all legit, and procedures have been followed, apparently not...

DOM called colleague, asking for update, colleague informed about sick note. DOM not happy, stated that as she hasn't been physically examined by a doctor, and also hasn't spoken to the doctor about the possibillity of doing light/indoor duties, is questioning the authenticity of the issue.

Colleague is quite stressed and worried about the situation as it "was not a pleasant call".

I've checked the attendance agreement, and can see nothing about a doctors sick note being any less genuine provided over the phone, as opposed to in person, and more importantly, cannot see any information whatsoever on the employee mentioning to the doctor if they feel they can do light/indoor duties, which DOM is adamant in saying is the employee's responsibility, even though colleague has been asked by doctor if they could work, and responded "no". :hmmmm

Think the DOM is trying to pressure her back to work. She has been advised to contact union rep ( even though DOM knows he is on holiday ) and to get back to doctors for physical examination, which she is happy to do, but finds it extremely difficult and painful to walk, so doesn't want to do it if its not required :hmmmm

That's what im thinking she will have to do. She was told by doctor if no progress made in the two weeks, then steroid injections could be pursued.

A sick note is a sick note. DOM states she has told the doctor what her condition is, so how can she confirm herself what the problem is, if the doctor has easily provided sick note? ... So in effect, is a self diagnosis.
Furthermore, colleague stated to the doctor that she works at RM as a postie, DOM replied that a doctor doesn't know the full operation of a postie, and may be providing a false sick note :arrrghhh

All absences are assumed to be genuine if said DOM is now a qualified doctor let him prove it by the way impersonating a doctor is a criminal offence here http://www.cps.gov.uk/westmidlands/cps_ ... g_a_doctor_/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Of course, but as we all know, they don't see it this way and expect all us posties to be 100% healthy at all times. They must really think we are robots

Colleague has booked another appointment. Still unsure on the amended duties however. If the postie deems themselves unable to work after being asked by the doctor, then i don't see a problem with that. Surely the postie will have more knowledge about their job than the doctor, and know themselves that there are no jobs that involve being seated 100% of the time.

Must have had a bee in his bonnet, it's not uncommon for him to project his anger on to other individuals. Is there potential for a bully claim here, or is it just poor management? Belittling my colleague with patronising comments. As im lead to believe, the call was anything but sympathetic as per the attendance procedure :hmmmm

I saw an advert today for a company called Push Doctor.
It appeared to be an online medical consultancy and they said they offered fit notes, clearly without any physical examination.

Maybe your DOM would like to contact the GP and repeat the suggestion that the fit note is bogus?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Interesting... Perhaps he has seen the same advert and is of the opinion they are a band charlatans.

Anyhow, colleague has been to doctor. After a few touches of the heel -with generic questions, of course- had symptoms confirmed as plantar fasciitis.

Maybe DOM is overtly pedantic, or indeed that colleague and i are begging the question :hmmmm

Sounds like DOM is bullying your work colleague back to work
Plantar fasciitis can be a very debilitating and may take several months for it to settle down.
The conditition really needs attention because it will remain if you just put up with it.
Your colleague needs to take time off and rest those feet and then request an OH assist back to work plan.
TAke the two week and remain in contact ,if feet still bad then go back and get another note
Best of luck to them
