Overtime Enforcement of rules

Post by postmanpleb »

As I left the DO this afternoon the DOM was on the point of meltdown. Several rounds had failed to go out at all. This has become a common recently, since the rules of when you can take your overtime out for delivery have been enforced.
OT cannot be taken out with normal work & staff have to return to DO & providing there is no "meaningful work" in the building, staff can pick up and deliver. Surprise surprise nobody wants to touch the overtime with a bargepole. We are understaffed, given too much lapsing & now this! Royal Mail has for years relied on OT to get them out of any mess they end up in, so I don't know how we are going to sort this out. My DO is in the South East and was wondering has this ruling come in where you work & the outcome?

They announced this in my office a couple of months ago, everyone who does overtime said they wouldnt bother anymore. Never been mentioned again and the ghost is still flowing.

We were told all lapsing to go and to stream our own walks to get the lapse done! Didn't think this was allowed!

itll either come down to the management buckling to the pressure and allow people to take OT with them or theyll eventually hire some more PT staff to cover the shortfall. I think more and more RM are taking the second option as DOMs seem to be told to manage their hours much more precisely than ever before. If people really need the money theyll do the OT, if they keep not doing it as theyre not making time and getting OT then they may end up losing out in the long run if they rely on OT.

Many duties are nothing close to achieveable, if delivered close to "by the book" (push trolley everywhere except flat blocks; no pouch on shoulder; grab mail for next address from bundle while standing still etc.) i.e. the standards which should be applied when planning a depot.

But to save the daily agro of claiming o/t or cutting off on their own duty, many OPGs don't work anything close to "by the book," including not using all their paid break time.

The line managers and DOMs often know damn well that corners are cut, which can mean the OPG signs out before their finish time, potentially having saved up to ~60mins by cutting corners and sometimes no taking any of their paid break at all.

All the DSM and higher managers see are OPGs signing out before their finish time, they aren't interested in how that finish time was achieved. In their utopia, they probably think we are all delivering correctly and still finishing our own duties early, being an OPG is an money for old rope job, so we should get more work to keep us busy until home time. :left:

As I have said before, you really couldn't write this stuff could you ?,but it's all getting a tad silly now,and Moyà won't really give a dam about it ,as much as she should, she's far removed from the hassle in day to day delivery office management,I'm not sure what the answer is,whistle blowing is fine, but we all have to be on board with it,management should be held accountable just as we are with failings,if you cut the workforce to the bone there will come a time where you simply don't have enough troops who can or want to go the extra mile to bail this penny pinching company out,the carpet is getting full up with stuff being brushed under it as and when it suits.

All overtime has been banned in our office, including early morning sorters,we now have our dom in early every morning doing the segging. we were shown an email telling our dom that any managers who booked overtime for the posties would be suspended, they are hoping that the runners when they get back, will take out walks that are not covered,so when we come in in the morning not only are there walks still in the frames that were not taken out the day before but also walks that were supposed to be lapsed and also cut offs, and then the cycle of despair begins all over again. One last thing, all this was reported to head office 6 weeks ago and the lad has still not had a reply. expecting a visit from the regulater very soon dom's words not mine.

Some guys always rely on a bit of overtime, so some of mail will go that way; some guys don't want the hassle of arguing with their manager and some of the mail may go that way; and the rest?? Well, if they can't bring anyone in and they don't want to ring the agency (because they need to keep costs down) then it means that the managers themselves will have to take the rest of the mail.

Skimming the mail cost one of the managers at our place their job because it is wilful delay regardless of the fact that they might say just take the important mail and leave the rest. How difficult do you think it would be for a senior manager to withhold some 'important' mail on someone's frame and then call that manager back in the office for a disciplinary?? Not difficult at all. The business wants the managers out there on delivery because they know it is saving them money. Believe it or not, RM don't care about their manager's welfare in much the same way as they don't really care about ours.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Someone better tell the Dim + linos in our place, because apparently "they aren't employed as post persons so will not be doing deliveries"
