THERE IS LIFE AFTER ROYAL MAIL

Post by Theghost »

I Left Royal Mail 6 weeks ago :dance After 20 + years service i made probably the hardest decision of my life.
I loved the job but the last few years it has been a drag,I kept my head down,Did my job and worked until my time.

The arguments of why did i need to leave mail stopped,I got into the habit of saying to them "What do you want me to do,Leave it in or bring it back"
I never gave them the option of anything else and if they questioned me i told them quite simply they were welcome to come out,But this is what needs to stay in.

It depressed me seeing managers bully others on a daily basis,Basically calling hardworking people liars because they could not complete the poorly planned round on time,Women reduced to tears by them because they had children to pick up from school,There is nothing worse than knowing you wont be able to complete only for a manager to say you can,Treated like children and no respect,Yet they always ask for it from us,Its a two way thing.

The battles to get time off,Holidays constantly turned down,Aching body,Sore feet,Lack of sleep thinking about going into work! The same cry babys in the office crying about the same old trivial things,The working for free early starters,Scan this,Scan that,The weather! Too wet,Too hot,Or too cold,Not knowing who my partner was from one day to the next,D2D I always hated doing those bastards 5 or 6 a week,But its ok they take no time.................
An office FULL of unhappy postmen,The job had turned into a depression for me.

After doing my new job for some time,Without going into too much detail,It is the total opposite,A place full of happy people and not one person complaining about the management,Just praise.
Realistic workloads,Appreciative managers who dont mind people having a chat and a laugh as long as the work is complete.
Monday-Friday 37.5 hour week.
The saying a happy workplace is a productive one is spot on and im loving every minute,I feel like i have my Mojo back.

It has made me realise how hard Royal mail workers work,The bosses are whipping willing horses and no doubt plenty will bolt in the coming months/years,SHAME ON YOU ROYAL MAIL,YOU ARE A DISGRACE!

When i tell the people i now work with the things being a postman entails,I dont think they quite believe me,It is a hard hard job,All the times i said to myself there must be something better out there has been born true,To anyone not sure of making the jump,Do not hesitate,I have worked with some fantastic people over the years and Royal mail do not deserve 90% of them.

I wish all of you the best,Do not let them grind you down,They hire your Labour for 39 hours per week,Or whatever you work,It does not entitle them to treat you like dirt and speak to you like crap and expect you to flog yourself for an extra 2,3 or 4 hours after your time.
Solidarity is a must over the coming months and years,Stick with your Union and stand strong together and should the dreaded strikes come,I shall be visiting my old Comrades with some goodies and Moral support.

I have nothing but respect for you all and always will. :wave

Glad you're enjoying your new job, but on balance when did anyone ever come on here and say they regretted leaving? :chuckle

Personally I enjoy the job being outdoors, doing a variety of work in different places, meeting different people, maintaining my fitness, the camaraderie that goes with the job.

What you can't do is let the bad aspects outweigh the good, I guess when you reach that stage it's time to leave.

Glad you've moved on and found happiness at work again, it must have been a hard decision after all those years.

I may be in a similar position myself in a couple months time, there a possibility that a couple jobs are coming up where my wife works, Monday to Friday, 37 hours a week and the same money as FT at RM.

I've got 13 years in but like you it will be really hard to actually take the plunge and leave
it's manageable in my office at the moment, there is presume to complete but they also know you are entitled finish on time, but the problem is the future, know one REALLY knows just how bad things will get but I think we've all got a good idea.

I would kick myself if I missed the opportunity to go and then things got really bad.

Well said and put by the Ghost. Good people are being hounded, harassed, bullied and demeaned by tyrant managers, who are mostly failed or incompetent lazy ex posties. . They could not complete a duty on time yet constantly accuse many posties who endeavour to do their best- a few bad apples granted but, very few. The job is s**t now, driven by whipping boys,we now have a blame blame culture thats only purpose is to scunner good staff into leaving and replace with poor down trodden staff on zero hour contracts ! while telling them they are lucky to have a job.

Did you get a new job ? and it can get to you if you let the job do. It is not too bad in our delivery office but getting your own walk and regular partner make it easier and taken the hassle away. But workload need to improve balance especially for mothers

Well said Ghost, you've absolutely nailed what it's like working for RM now. I do get annoyed when some come on here saying that there is nothing out there if you leave, you won't get the same pay and conditions etc. Negative stuff in my view. Money isn't everything. Maybe it's because RM have ground them down that they think this but it's not always true as you have proved. Good luck to you. You managed to escape! :dance

This post is so true and like others I too am considering my options. It's a sad state of affairs when you're checking the job sites daily after work.

The pros used to massively outweigh to cons but not anymore!

Unfortunately RM can't understand that if you encourage and appreciate your staff then you will get a more productive workforce who will go the extra mile. Weirdly they think that if you dumb down people, alienate them, flog them to death and make them feel worthless while treating them like s**t you will get more from them. They think that we will work better under this culture of fear they are creating. Just think we are paying £2.5 million a year for the person at the top to run the company this way. What a joke and it shows a complete lack of understanding of how to manange people.

The 'decent' pay at RM has always been the only saving grace with this job, but now that minimum wage/living wage is rapidly catching up it makes other jobs look very attractive.

Good luck to you, mate. Everything you said in your post, is true. Royal Mail are a bloody awful firm to work for, and the job has just gone to hell in a handcart now. Management have no respect for their hardworking staff, not an ounce.
You're well out of it, and I'm as envious as f**k!

I cannot think why in the 21 st century... they think backwards....
Maybe they want full timers to leave but when the part timers are also leaving at the same rate who would work for them?
