Part time low senior postworker will soon have their own duties

Hi all.
Just wanting to know if this is happening in your offices or that you know if this has gone on in the past. We are doing a revision to save hours in the office and some of the full time duty holders will soon be full time reserves to make way for part timers. The ones with around the 30hr mark will become cover and the ones on around 25hrs will become a duty holder. Apparently this will save on hours in the office. They are scrapping the long weekends, instead cover people will take a Monday and Tuesday off each week. It's great for the low senior people but not so good for the ones that have been there years.

Yes happening in our office.people with 10 years plus service being forced to be a reserve or work a 10-6 duty while people on a 35hr contract who have 18 months service get there own duty because we can't sign for them.

Even worse for some of us who dropped hours ie 39 over 5 days to 25 over 3 days are now being asked to do 25 hours over 5 days

Yes postmen with 10 plus years being moved onto different rounds while loads of new starters are kept on their own jobs.Is this fair its also happening to me but that is because they see me as a troublemaker but I cant remember what came first me being a "troublemaker" or me standing up for myself because of bullying

Yep happening in ours too senior guys now being made reserves new starters getting own delivery. Being reserve would not bother me personally it's the day off that would not knowing from one week to the next.

Part of bigger strategy to phase out full-timers? By that I mean make the job not as comfortable so they leave of their own accord, or reduce their hours ..

what a minute can they actually phase out seniority?

if there is a resign or some drastic changes, they resulting to pulling your name out of a hat?

How is this even being handled ????

To be frank, seniority hasn't been binned, just that Royal Mail have probably played it canny and put most of the duties on Part Time and most reserves as Full Time (it does make business sense) so the Senior guys do get 1st choice, but if they want to stay on their FT hours all they get to chose from is reserve duties.

your saying tom who has done his round and knows his customers for 15-20 years now has reduce his hours to stay on the same walk or be treated as a junior once again and be siufted from one walk to another as and when his dom decides,

so are they trying the reverse physc technique,

hey you can stay as a F/timer but we will make your life miserable in return just liek it was when you first started today your on walk 62, tommorow i will let you know, rest day tuesday of cource easiest day of the week we dont need you then...................!

They seem quite happy to let offices draw up their own revision plans and 'ring fence' part time duties to encourage a largely part-time workforce. And if Im honest, this is probably one of the reasons why the business is incredible wary of the Union's "35 hour working week". It would mean that they will have to not only have to increase part-time workers hours but also the pro-rota D2Ds and every other payment that part-timers get pro-rota for, like our Xmas bonus - assuming that the Grinch doesn't get it scrapped it in the negotiations.

our office has just gone through an apparent revision where this has happened. however, our area union rep said that a round only went up for resign if the round holder wanted it to. so the most senior people bitched that their rounds were too heavy, so they had minimal changes and a cushy deal still. our union rep "won" a fight to keep our "older" part timers on their four day weeks with the same start time rather than later. but this means that regardless of seniority they are in effect trapped on their rounds as they can't sign for a full time round and they can only sign for a part time round if they move to five days not four. and those of us who are full time and stuck in the middle, can't really sign for anything as the new people are getting rounds, even the reserve rounds were all given to the new part timers. those of us who are part time reserves who have a few years seniority are even having days when we are "spare" and they're trying to encourage us to take annual leave on these days.

I brought this up with a area rep once
Why should Joe bloggs with 12 months service get a delivery over someone with 10 years service. Surely we should be protecting full time delivery's/jobs.
His response was we are you are still in full time employment as a reserve that's the full time job protected. Really.

In reality this has been going on for nigh on 30 years at least. I know of of newstarts in the 1980s that got duties ahead of FTers, so it's not new, but this was when AG and FT duties WERE separate. Today, who knows...?
