2d barcode scanning

Post by alcatraz »

Can someone answer me this question, having known I have scanned 100 per cent 2d barcodes for the week, up on the board it was near 90 per cent just over the
so called acceptable rate before you get coached, counselling, conduct etc, being a duty holder, why I am my relying on not just myself but a few other members of staff including floaters and people who take off lapsing parts of the frame and also when parcels are left in someone does it on overtime, my question is you could be scanning 100 per cent and you come in the following week to find out your under the acceptable rate! so you could end up being coached etc all the time and it could be sum other members of staff on your duty floaters ,people on overtime packets etc and its the duty holder that gets pulled up, so effectively you could be taken to conduct for other peoples mistakes, how is this a fair system?? has anyone refused to sign any coaching based on this? why aren't the unioun clarifying to their members royal mails intentions on coaching counselling conduct for 2d barcodes etc when the system is full of faults. :arrrghhh

+ for a £1k piece of kit (allegedly) the scanner function on my PDA leaves a lot to be desired. A lot. Scan 15 times and it still won't pick up many codes - so you do the manual route. Kind of defeats the object IMO.

And a scanner that can't scan is like, well, a stud that can't get an erection :left:

Sad truth is that on most days you won't get 100% because you always get one or two that just won't scan. But I had similar thing on my week off, apparently a load of parcels didn't get scanned on my duty, but it obviously wasn't me. Thanks for not checking that before consulting with me, manager.

don't get me wrong, some weeks 1 or 2 wont scan for whatever reason, but if uve got 2, your floaters got 2, guys on overtime on your parcels have a few and another postman who lifts lapsing of your frame has a few, they just come up to the duty holder and do them? that's what's not fair! this particular week I had a lucky week where everything did scan so I come in and its at 90 percent none of them mine, but the duty holder is the one held responsible and gets the 3 cs ,that's my point you could end up been out of job for others mistakes,

The main thing, surely, is that the recipient received the parcel. That the barcode wasn't, for whatever reason, on that particular occasion scanned isn't the end of the world. It is DEFINITELY not a reason for a working person to lose their livelihood.

I've had similar crap recently. Manager been informed of apparently defective PDA but will have none of it.

Just seems that its yet another stick with which to beat us and get us over a barrel.

The whole reasonable belief/reasonable doubt issue needs looking at. The union movement need to knock this crap on the head - cos its not just the posties being affected by this draconian and surreptitious threat. There will be lots of ordinary working people perpetually stressed for leaving the top off the biro.
The balance needs seriously redressing.

Situation not helped by the 2d barcode labels being put over the corners of some parcels.... :mad No matter how often you try, you simply cannot scan such a label. Could the pda have some optical character recognition to be able to read the long set of digits?

Agree with you there GG, but if a delivery PDA scanner can't read the 2D code (as it's been creased, put over the corner of parcel, covered in plastic/sellotape etc.)
are the scanners in mail/parcel centres that much better that they can read those bar codes, thereby creating a missed/failed scan on delivery?

Are 2d barcode labels on packets and parcels that have got past the PO counter as 'letters' included in the figures for
managers to beat us about the head with?

Also we found........cos of some walks with low scanning numbers...the d.o.m produces a list of 2d scans through the mail cantre.

this is a list maybe 6 to 10 long with the parcels destination on it....ie

1....75 smth street
2....103 jones street.

etc..

so we then check the parcels and some are missing so at a guess some are mis sorted at the centre???
or mis sorted in the office etc

so then the scan rate wont be 100%

One question that I cannot get a straight answer to.

What is scanned at the Mail Centre. Is it ALL 2d barcodes? (I cannot believe that it is)

If not all scanned , then they can only be using a sample per walk. And if that is so ; then you cannot produce accurate % figures.

Or am I missing something?

From what I have seen a on my Doms computer screen each walk has a " planned " and " unplanned total " the planned is the quantity scanned in the MC and this is where the % comes from.

You could have 100 2d codes of which 10 were planned , not scan these 10 and have a zero percentage yet scan and deliver the other 90 correctly but it wouldn't show in the figures.

They only get scanned outward (early and late shifts, don't know about weekend shifts. I wouldn't be surprised if scanning of them stops the moment it looks like it could be tight for time or if they're short on staff
