What does the future hold ???
After reading some of the topics on here I was just interested to hear people's views of where they think the future of Royal Mail is going? The union currently proposing the 4 pillars of society, Royal Mail trying to change everything (Not for the good)
whats people's views on the future of our Jobs/livelihoods

I'm quite new to the company but from what I've seen so far, RM are decades behind other companies out there when it comes to maximising profit from their staff.
Changes I think will be definite are;
Clocking in machines, no more job and finish. Breaks will also have to be taken before you leave the building if you want paid for them.
Monthly pay (I don't think there's any getting out of that one). ALL payments combined into an hourly rate. Including election material and delivery supplement to simplify the payment process.
No pay for first 3 days sickness.

What does the future hold ? Increased automation leading to a reduced workforce. Or, the same sized workforce on fewer hours.
This isn't just the future for RM BTW
Makes me think that the drive for a 35 hour week from the CWU is a very good idea indeed.

The future is that everything will be done "online". So add us on facebook all your letters will be posted on your 'wall'
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

I think in 10 years time we will be a much smaller company than the one that we have at the moment
Royal Mail are spending millions on automation letter machines but will they really be necessary in 10 years time?? A change in law could always put a spanner in the works where flyers, sorry D2Ds, are concerned

Some good points so far......I agree with the monthly pay it seems to be what most company's do nowadays ...
In our office we have a select few who are relied upon to do the overtime for the managers ... even now you hear them
Debate it in there wages about being wrong so If they can't get it right now on weekly pay imagine what it will be like on monthly ...
The d2d and election payments will absolutely suck !!! The amount of money RM earn from this, nothing worse than having to prep 6 D2D in one week :-o
Will feel proper shafted ....
I don't know how anyone else feels but I don't have that much faith in our union ....
After listening to the older posties the impression I have is they just seem to roll over and take back handers

Does anyone have any idea how they would introduce monthly pay? I mean they couldn't just pay everyone one Friday and then that's it pay wise for 4 long weeks!

No one would be relied upon to keep track of your overtime though, once you're clocking in and out overtime will be automatically recorded and paid. It's always worth keeping a hard copy yourself though, most underpayments when using a machine are down to user error so in this case you would need some way of remembering how many hours you should be paid that month. The last company I worked for only paid overtime in 15 minute increments, so if you were contracted to 3pm and clocked off at 14 minutes past you would lose 14 minutes pay.Gangham_style14 wrote:In our office we have a select few who are relied upon to do the overtime for the managers ... even now you hear them

As for combining all other payments. They could average how much they are paying out each year per person and add it into the hourly rate for everyone to share. The system they have in place just seems to me that they're giving themselves a lot of extra work by over complicating things. But that's just my opinion.

You raise some good points all of which I am in agreement with. Through the years my experience has been that Royal Mail loves to make simple things more complicated than they need to be.AceMark wrote:No one would be relied upon to keep track of your overtime though, once you're clocking in and out overtime will be automatically recorded and paid. If you do away with election and door to door payments then the obvious answer seems to be to divide the total payments over the year between everyone by simply increasing the hourly rate of pay. No more counting poll cards and hours spent inputting election payment sheets. No room for errors such as under or over payments.
Clocking in machines should have been introduced decades ago like a lot of other businesses have. Relying on individuals to sign in and out on paper is wide open to fraud. In my office most seem obsessed with 2.05pm or 1.50pm as their finish time even though the law clearly states your break should not be taken in its entirety at the end of shift. In my office the start time is 7am and finish time is 2.30pm or 2.45pm yet so many individuals are signing out at 1.30pm or earlier. My understanding is you can only claim 20 minutes of your break at the end of your shift. The sooner we have clocking in machines the better. Then maybe people will think twice before bunking off early if their pay is docked and rightly so.

Why don't we have a firing squad for anyone who gets back 5 minutes early...
No wonder we are all doomed when the staff members come on here trying to shaft themselves you couldn't make it up if you tried!

Clocking in and out is never going to happen because then they would have to pay all the hours people do instead of bullying them into not claiming it. In my office all those that work for free I.e. Coming in early and not taking a break and putting d2d in their own time as well as not claiming at the end then our office overtime would triple and they know it
