Moving offices for a better contract in a swap deal quiery

Post by postiewhite »

Im on a 25hr contract and ideally I could do with a 30+hr contract for future peace of mind. Anyway i've found a position in a nearby office on a 30hr contract so I have applied and sucessfully managed to organise a transfer which will happen in a couple of weeks. My current manager wants to keep me but says he cant just give me a 30hr contract as its out of their control, understandable as there are 2 staff senior to me that are only on 20hr contracts.
Anyway I have since found out the office im transferring to there is a postman there that wants to transfer to my current office ( now a swap deal) but this person is on a 30hr contract and will keep that contract when transferred.

It sort of makes me angry because I dont want to leave my office, im trained up on all duties but I will be replaced by someone who is on the same contracted hrs as what I want, less senior and needs to learn all the duties. It seems daft that RM let this happen. Is there anything that can be done before im transferred?

Surely with automation bringing changes in the near future part time hours will hopefully change for the better and you might wish you'd never moved and be unable to get back, I'm in a similar position wanting more hours but would rather hang fire and see what happens with my contracted hours them move to another office, just a thought.

Catch 22 isn't it. We are 4 staff short and although ive never had a problem getting the overtime in the past there will be no guarantees I would get any if we recruit one or two more, that is my worry and then I'd wished I had have jumped ship for more contracted hrs. My current thoughts are, worse case scenario if I move and get the better contract then my current office has a fulltimer retiring in a year and I could time it right to see the DOM of my current office for a move back and I should be able to keep my current 30hr contract, a move back not guaranteed I know but im sure the office would rather have me back seeing as im fully trained up on all duties and indoor work than a new starter who needs months and months of learning lots of duties to be efficient on indoor work?? I am allowed to move offices after 6 months transferred.

All this has been going through my mind for weeks now but it just seems annoying that the person that will replace me will be on a 30hr contract. My DOM is going to bring this up at a meeting this week but Im not holding my hopes up to get a better contract. I posted this in the Union section to see if there is any last minute hope or avenue we could persue to help keep me in my current office giving me a slightly improved contract.

Hope it works out for you im probably just sceptical as when i joined royal mail I hoped to get a transfer to my local depot from depot I was given a job at but it took 6 years to get a transfer there so i ain't budging now. Im hoping when automation comes in i can get more hours somehow but suppose I should just hope to have a job still :). Good luck anyway.
