Your post needs to be clarified somewhat in order to give the information that you require.
1) How long were you sick for?
2) Did you receive that standard letter from management concerning this absence and setting up contact details required in the attendance procedure?
3) Why was an EMPLOYEE and not EMPLOYER knocking at your door?
4) Have you received correspondence charging you with an UNAUTHORISED ABSENCE?

What do you mean no one called work for you?
Why did you not inform your manager you was sick before your start time ?

The employee would have been sent round to check on your welfare. Not violate your rights.

Without any answers to Rehabrons questions there is not a lot to go on. However, don't forget that if you made no contact, or no one did on your behalf, then Royal Mail have a "Duty of Care" and it may be possible that any grievance would fail based on just that.

I'm a single parent, unless I phone in, no one phones in. I have attended a fact finding interview and I now have a "gross misconduct" meeting to attend.
"Duty of Care" is not a legal term and in my previous management experience, HR make an appointment for a home visit.
This is why I'm trying to get hold of the "unauthorised absence guide" although this is proving to be harder to get than rocking horse crap!
I'm a part time postie, working 24 hours although I don't see why that is relevant.
I missed one shift.

It looks as though Managers at least can make a personal visit. The employee not so sure.

"Duty of Care" is a common law term and may not be applicable in this case that's why I said "may".

There is also this in the zip file in TrueBlueTerrier's link...

01 Draft Absence Notification and Maintaining Contact Guide.doc

What happens if the employee does not make contact and is absent?
Where an employee is absent and has not made contact with the manager, the manager should attempt to contact the employee. This should include several attempts before recording the absence as unauthorised. If contact is still not made then the manager should record the employee’s absence as unauthorised via Managing My Team on PSP (Enter/update absence). The manager will then be prompted to produce Day One Letter No Contact, which should be sent to the employee by Special Delivery and by First Class post. The manager should then follow the process contained within the Unauthorised Absence Guide.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
