Why won't they replace full timers who leave

Post by Manboat »

Our office struggles most days due to sickness and having full timers leave and not replace which is probably the same all over the company, Royal mail are quite happy to have the managers and dom support out delivering for hours even after quite a few staff have covered rounds off on overtime. The dom has asked for more hours to be put in but has said the powers that be keep knocking him back, what's happening with this company, if everyone just stopped doing overtime on the busy days especially surely something would have to be done then as they'd be screwed.

Running the company understaffed means in quiet weeks they save money. In heavy weeks the quality of service might decline but not noticeably (they hope).

Know what your saying norm but there doesn't seem to be any quiet weeks any more at our place, asking people to work there days off seems to be constant and getting annual leave can be a struggle too. Like I said our sickness at the moment us pretty bad so that won't be helping but the office is definately understaffed.

Simply because RMs only focus is to have ALL delivery done by part time workers.
Strange there is little or no focus on the high earning senior staff who still enjoy lucrative bonuses, in payment for shafting delivery staff.
It's more cost effective and the next step towards zero hour contracts !
We are only paying the price for our own blinkered thinking.
We have made it too easy for RM since privatisation, kidded into accepting agreements- after all we are all now shareholders, lol. It's been like lambs to the slaughter, far to many colleagues have fell into the trap and we are all going to suffer for arseholes who refuse to do the job properly. To late now, the stable door has been firmly jammed open and the horses have bolted. No REAL leadership from the CWU, they never acted to stop RMs blatent abuse and enforce methods etc which should have been enforced thus safeguarding FT jobs - after all it is a basic duty expected from a union. Sorry and sad to say, we took a stick to our own backs - selfishness has prevailed and we have fallen for the carrots dangled ( short sighted greed in my opinion ) since accepting flexibility/ corrupt unachievable revision workloads - only achieved by the actions of people not working to agreed work plans? The lesson still more compounded by constant never ending further absorption and lapsing which was and is still blindly accepted and staff work for non payment. Yeh, it's crazy, but is it
Sooooooo surprising to anyone that this would eventually happen? RIP posties, our union leadership and many colleagues are more culpable than what RM are going to implement. We are all doomed!

Yeah save your £4 a week & hope everyone joins you.
Without the union it will.be milk & honey. RM can't wait to improve our t&c once we abandon the union.
F***ing union stopping us from improving our lot.

Why would they offer more full time contracts when, going forward, they don't believe there will be sufficient work to sustain those already in post?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Excellent post. This 4 pillar strategy of the CWU is deeply flawed, particularly the pillar of the 35 hour working week with no loss in pay that is supposed to stand up with the pillar that supports changing the pipeline. Its just giving the company the green light to reduce our hours towards an ever growing part-time workforce. And if it is without any loss in pay, all I can see happening is even more pressure being put on staff to achieve the productivity levels for that pay. Im not against the company wanting increased efficiency but I am totally against any petty bullying used by managers because they either don't want to pay overtime or go out on delivery
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

What should the union do about increased automation.
Stick it's head in the sand & say la la it's not happening.
No it should increase everyone's hours to 42 with a 10% pay rise so we can all finish 2 hours early every day without breaking sweat.
What's the point of the union if it can't do that

Thanks for all your replies, it seems we are in for a long bumpy ride, surely not as bad as zero hour contracts I hope and I'm assuming if so for new starters only, shame every staff member in all depots don't sing from the same hymn sheet and do the job right and maybe not work over in the short term as seems to be the only way we may get extra hours put in where needed as managers can only cover off so many cut offs and sickness. Appreciate part timers like myself might need the overtime but surely it's worth it in the long run.

Before we cut back on the overtime, which we get paid for why don't we stop coming in early &;working for nothing.
That might get a few more hours in offices & people made up
