we have been told by our office manager that we should no longer be using seniority for duties & holidays. I cant possibly see any other fair way of allocating such things. those of us who have got the years in { I have 27 years service } had to have the last pick of holidays when we started , we just accepted it now we are towards the top of the list it is surely only fair we get first pick. it seems to me that management are trying to stir up bad feeling between the long serving staff & the newer ones. I would be interested to hear others opinions on this.

But you only standing by your position because you have the length of service you have, given your length of service I would guess your family is grown up. What gives you the right to choose holidays ahead of people with young families when they are restricted due to school holidays etc etc etc. Today everyone is treated equal that is the only true fair way.

Apart from the fact that its illegal. But more importantly, it's against agreements. For leave, everyone should have the same chance and Units should have come up with an agreed process where seniority isn't the overriding factor. Its part of the Way Forward agreement and has been out for most of your career by now.stourpostie wrote:sorry but that reply can only have come from someone with not many years in seniority is the ONLY fair way to allocate holidays & duties .
However, for revisions and duties then Seniority does apply.

So draw lots for each week you mean? Some people like to have say 2 weeks off in the summer hols,If you only got one week off and had to work on the Saturday before your week off,you wouldn't even be able to go away until the Saturday afternoon meaning you wouldn't even be able to go abroad for a week unless you got a late fight!Gazza47 wrote:Think the only fair way is to draw lots if people want the same day off, length of service sex etc is not really fair.

Spot on. If it wasn't RM I would find it hard to believe that after so many years of having an agreement it is still being ignored in some areas.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Apart from the fact that its illegal. That's pretty clear as has been said above that it's being ignored in some offices doesn't surprise me.TrueBlueTerrier wrote:Way Forward Agreement: http://www.cwu.org/media/5718/the-way-f ... 015doc.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Page 19 - 21 For leave and leave allocation.

ive worked for RM for 20 years and in the early days (before kids) i never picked any time off when the schools were on half term. i thought it only fair that those with kids should be able to spend time with them. i now have 3 kids myself and cannot always get leave when i would like to off with them, which by the way leaves me with 20+ days to have off this working year. i must admit that those few years of me trying not to clog up annual leave on half term weeks hasnt worked in my favour. from now on, i pick when i want to be off not when i thought i could be helping people out. learnt the hard way!!

Alternatively they are following employment law and following national agreed guidelines?stourpostie wrote: it seems to me that management are trying to stir up bad feeling between the long serving staff & the newer ones.
How embarrassing that offices are still using seniority to allocate holidays.
How embarrassing that unions are screwing over their own sub paying part time members.
Perhaps Dingo will pop up with that arcane letter from some obscure (former?) director saying seniority is all good but it isn't.
Anyone who understands the employment rights of part time staff wouldn't think it was right.
Anyone who understands trade unionism wouldn't think it was right.
People bang on on this site about discrimination so often.
Well done to your managers for trying to put an end to it.
Part-time workers should get the same treatment for:
pay rates (including sick pay, maternity, paternity and adoption leave and pay)
pension opportunities and benefits
holidays
training and career development
selection for promotion and transfer, or for redundancy
opportunities for career breaks
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

So in your view seniority breeds laziness?slinder123 wrote:get rid of seniority all the lazy gits hide behind it rotate the duties is fairer cant wait till its done and yes i have 23 years so far
In my view 23 years of service is at the higher end of seniority.
So what does that make you.
