So in our Work Time Learning our DOM pulled us all around and made a big song and dance over how important it is we take our breaks and not rush around after we had 4 van accidents in a week.
I made a suggestion that perhaps if we started 30 minutes earlier. That way after the first lorrys worth of sorting is done we'd have a 20-30 minute gap for us all to take our break.
Apparently it wouldn't tie in with the budget?!
How that makes any sense I do not know.

Wearypostie.
More like common sense, and the early starts would lose out. They are every managers dream I'm afraid.

Actually if an office regularly "worked to rule" i.e did the job as RM set out, it'd make the DOMs job easier because any outsider looking at the unit would see people aren't finishing early, therefore there's no potential for savings.

How did your suggestion go down with those who would not welcome earlier starts?

Correct.
We as a group are quick to blame the DOMs but we are our own worst enemies. Don't come in early, take your break and show that it can't be done and everyone is happy.
Come in early sign out to go home at 1pm ish and someone somewhere sees this and says that the office isn't running efficiently enough

The posties that get in early anyway would love it to hell with the rest. Are you one of them?.weary_posty wrote:So in our Work Time Learning our DOM pulled us all around and made a big song and dance over how important it is we take our breaks and not rush around after we had 4 van accidents in a week.

Customers would like it,which is more important.catch people in , less stuff brought back, fewer people queuing at callers office, what's not to like? With the way it's going ,the only time we'll catch people in, is evenings.cpsteve wrote:The posties that get in early anyway would love it to hell with the rest. You are right on that point. RM are putting the boot into us and we accept it !
DOMs on the end of a conference call phone line have their hands tied, to a certain extent.
RM senior managers bury their head in the sand ( they don't really ), they are well aware of people not doing the job properly. Sit back and allow us to suffer for our own ignorance and failures.
They take it as given in my opinion - factored in - when it comes to absorption/lapsing. There's little or no fight back.
It's wrong. WE get told any work to RULE is illegal, and cannot be found to encourage members to do it as a tool to regain hours into a DO -what is already a given with RM in our agreements etc, I may add.
They use OUR own failings to THEIR advantage. Once the blinkers fall off, and we start on time, have breaks and use agreed methods we would win easily. Over worked, stressed out posties would be a thing of the past.
RM would have NO argument on putting additional workload onto OPGs if time does not allow.
Alas, we still have turkeys looking forward to Xmas amoung our colleagues, sad I know, but true.

Why would management move back to earlier starts when they already moved to later starts to avoid paying early shift bonuses?!?!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

Most people who go to work are out by 8.30 what time do you want us to start.rubberbond wrote:Customers would like it,which is more important.catch people in , less stuff brought back, fewer people queuing at callers office, what's not to like? Early start times have very little to do with what Posties would like, or when customers go to work, or would like their mail delivered. Start times are designed to fit in with the delivery of your mail from your nearest Mail Centre.
It is inefficient (even if the Early Birds like it) to come in early, throw off all your mail and packets....and then stand around with your finger up your Bum for 30 mins waiting for the last lot of mail to arrive. We've got several guys that do this. I time them regularly on Mondays, coming in at 0500 (according to the signing in sheet) and not actually doing ANYTHING until the 1st mail arrives at 0615!
The same people them complain that they've got no time to Lapse and they'll need some specials delivered for them as they'll not get to that address by 1300.
We are basically working with Dickheads people, and If I was a Manager I'm sure I'd be pulling my hair out. I sometimes wish we had a Manager that actually had the Balls to sort these idiots out, as I'm sure someone will be quick to point out....It's not my job to sort them out!

I recently moved from an office of early starters, nobody took breaks, the rep could be spotted leaving at 11:00am some days. I've moved to an office which does almost everything by the book, the difference is night and day, early starts and break skipping will only get us even longer, harder walks. Yes we finish a bit later, but the workload is fairer and you're less exhausted at the end of it.norm wrote:Actually if an office regularly "worked to rule" i.e did the job as RM set out, it'd make the DOMs job easier because any outsider looking at the unit would see people aren't finishing early, therefore there's no potential for savings.

We need someone to open up at 0500, because we have a large business customer that either collects or drops off a lot of mail (don't know which I don't give a shite). I know this because one of the pair that open up (we need two due to H&SSpacePhoenix wrote:What's their "proper" start time?
Due to the DO being "Open" it gives the OK to any other "Early Bird" to come in and start prepping their Duty, although on Mondays there's nothing to do (apart from perhaps Households. But most of these Dickheads have done them in their Own Time/Meal Relief after finishing early on Saturday)
I love Mondays because EVERYONE starts prepping their Duties at the same time (no chance to do a quick hours prep when you should be sorting). You can really see the difference in how long it takes when the "Runners" don't get that head start. Also very quiet as the gobshites are busy throwing off, instead of walking around laughing & joking while waiting for some more mail.
