Lapsing question

Post by eastie »

We have lapsing when the workload is below a certain level on for instance Monday, Tuesdays and Saturdays but today (Wednesday) about 1 hour before we went out on delivery with a heavy day the DOM said that due to illness of staff there was to be double lapsing.
I know we can just work to our time which me and my P/L partner did and did not do the lapsing but pressure is put onto the 25 hour lot to take it.
I was under the impression that they couldn't put extra lapsing on due to staff absences and it went as O/T or am I wrong?

My take on your all too common situation is 'Will the lapsing amount take you over?' If yes then do you want the O/T (and book it accordingly)? If yes and you don't want the O/T then inform the screws simples - all O/T is voluntary. If any lapsing will not take you over even at dawdle speed then the leg you were standing on is no longer there.

no, lapsing can only take place, when the traffic figure is below the model week and not to be used in times of sickness!!! we need a better way of saying no to DOMS, the current situation needs looking at, because it just causes arguments between management and posties.

They can ASK you to take out as much as they want. They shouldn't call it lapsing though, that is the problem.

sadly
New arrangements to cover for one another and develop sensible options to absorb absences, and increased workload, where time exists within normal hours
To ensure all paid work hours are utilised
To creates a working environment where employees, CWU reps and managers feel valued and motivated.

Aye, lapsing makes me feel "valued and motivated". It's getting beyond a joke now.

The key in that statement that you posted true blue was "where time exists within normal hours"

We have had two instances where the managers tried to stick double lapse on us because of staff sickness. Its almost like the company is saying that we are all going to suffer because someone has rung in sick. And what really, really annoys me is the fact that there are staff who were quite prepared to come in and work their day off.

This lapsing nonsense has become one big joke at our expense.

If it's overtime, how can it be lapsing?
Last week they were giving some people o/t,whilst trying to lapse the same delivery,I get the impression that confusion reigns, not communication.furthermore, what on earth is this model week based on? Fantasy? Wind direction?

The managers lapse the delivery, then when half a dozen guys turn round and inform the manager that they don't have time to do the lapse. They then ask staff if they want any overtime for it.

And the question I ask is: Is any overtime that you claim for possibly working past your time on your own delivery any better or worse than the overtime that you get for doing the lapsing part on another delivery??

Lapsing = a problem for people who finish duties early and knock off.

You work to the rules and finish on time you don't have to do lapsing.

You want overtime? do it and book the overtime = More money.

Again job and knock is the cause of a problem with some staff feeling like they are owed the right to leave early and be paid as the duty they are assigned is complete for the day when the business still has outstanding work to be completed!.

We lapse every day even if its busy. Was snowing here today and still lapsed 2 duties. Manager turns up at 9, gone by 10. Our office is best performing in sector cuz he doesn't give out our holidays or lieu days or pay overtime. This is what ur dealing with nowadays. Tyrant bosses.

Love how they give u 30 mins lapsing when its rammed, snowing and the van wont start and then have the cheek to say "be careful out there no need to rush about"

You dont say whether or not you have time to lapse but otherwise thats not typical of our office at all, if they tried that it would go very badly for them. I think you need to speak with the union rep about whats going on at your unit,

We're long past that stage. Nobody has a backbone in our office. I refuse to lapse but just ends up with more bullying and down conduct when everyone else can do it. Everyone just does it, nobody fights. Union rep does nothing.

The Lapsing Message is not getting through. I'm still amazed that Experienced Posties with 20 or 30 years service do not know the "Rules" for lapsing. I have Absolutely No Sympathy for idle bastards that refuse to lapse because they want to go home early. As previously mentioned, IF you have the time Lapse...IF you haven't got the time Don't Lapse! It's not bloody rocket science! :d'oh!

A few of the Old & Bold in my DO seem to think it relies on if their mates are lapsing, "Are you taking lapsing today, I'm not sure if I'll be taking mine" Or we get the sulky childish approach, "I'm not taking my lapsing because he's not taking his lapsing"! FFS Like I always say we're working with dickheads people. :cuppa

Last Friday we were told whilst out on duty that we would be lapsing. We were on loop 2, DOM calls and tells partner that because someone had gone sick we were to pick up lapsing when we returned. Returned to office 15 mins early so did lapsing. Problem came when there's some who finish when they've finished and don't return to office. Hope he doesn't make a habit of this.
