6 Hour Deliveries

Knowing that a manager has just been given a new role of a Planner with his job spec being planning 6 hour deliveries I was wondering what the stance is on this and when it will be implemented and what the union stance is?

the stance is....it WONT be implemented unless it is agreed by the union.

It wouldn't surprise me to see it come in, the new machines that RM are looking to bring in are a real game changer both in MCs and DOs. In MCs manual letter and flat sorting will probably be virtually eliminated and depending on what parcel sorting technology RM goes for, MCs could in theory end up sorting small parcels down to walk level.

In DOs the net result of the new machines will be very little indoor work in DOs as the new machines that RM are looking to introduce can sequence flats and letters together.

I'm guessing that RM will try and go for 3hrs, then you have your lunch break then another three hours. For an 8 hour day that probably gives them scope to bolt on a couple of hours worth of collections

I hope it does come in. 3 hours out then 1 hour back at the office then another 3 hours out. Deliveries close to 5 or 6 hours now anyway. Will make rveryome regret not having their breaks coming in early making them look more efficient than they are

I'm on a 6day week with 1in6 weeks off,if 6hr deliveries come in,then there's no way I could physically manage 6x 6hr deliveries a week.

We all have to be realistic with the new machines that are coming in. If the indoor work is getting less the only way to protect full time hours is to extend the outdoor work. Surely that is all Royal mail are proposing.

6 hour deliveries will mean one of two things for me.
1/ Strike to stop it.
If 1 fails ....
2/ Resign and look for new job.
Rather be healthy and skint than break myself to line some shareholders pocket. I'd like to take the people whose idea it is out for a week doing my delivery and see how they get on!!!

How's doing a 3 hour duty and then returning to the office to go back out effeciant in anyway. If like my office a town centre office you could be taking an hour - hour and half in traffic alone.
Also our outdoor times are already between 5-5 and a half long so with breaks it is 6 hours.
We need some proper facts and not rumours because from what I've read even one wave can only reduce indoor time to 20% of your working day and cannot be implemented in every office.
As some have said though the health issue of doing a delivery as long as some suggest isn't sustainable, for example, this week has been very cold so how do you stay out in that, for that length of time all week and it not affect how long it takes to do a delivery.
The union need to seriously look at the h&s of all this

If the indoor element is being eroded, how do we fill those hours ? Increase in part time duties , longer outdoor element or cut in the working week. Most likely a bit of all three but I doubt things will stay as they are.

sorry if this has been mentioned....but 6 hours delivery....

most of p/time staff in our office are on 20-27 hours....

6hr delivery and add abit of bagging it all and lading,,,travelling,,,must put that up to 7hrs.
so 5 days at 7 hrs.....35hr week.....heck of a jump in hours....

good for you if you want it, im fulltime btw.

ok so they bring p/time in for 3 or 4 days so 4 times 7=28....but more staff are needed for the other days...

im missing something?

6 hour deliveries won't happen because;

1) They aren't going to pay to have revision in every office.
2) The H&S of it is unsound.
3) They want flexibility going forwards, not rigid duties where you have to fight the workforce to take 10 minutes lapse on a light day.

What I expect will come in is solo van duties, and you get assigned a predefined amount of work on the day, the new sequencers will build most of your duty for you.

We are already doing 5 to 5 and half hour deliveries at the moment. What makes them 6 hour plus is the fact that our paid breaks and meal relief are added.

It sounds like a Union ideal for us all to take an hour break at the office before going back out on delivery again but on a business level its obviously not very efficient in practice. Not just the fact that nearly 90% of posties don't even bother with a break and that Royal Mail are basically getting thousands of hours of work for free. Ask anyone who remembers doing second deliveries years ago that the Royal Mail were very keen to have a single daily delivery, even though it encompassed a larger round.

For most p-timers this will be a good thing. Managers have already made sure most of our work is outdoors anyway. And if breaks are enforced, plus extra travel time. Add to fact most of the newer staff seem to get all the duties that are over 5 hours. If anything we'll be doing less work than we're doing currently. Royal mail is in for a fright in my opinion. I don't think they have any idea how badly designed most walks/ offices really are.
