Buy down hours

I was interested reducing my hours last year so asked about the buy down scheme, at the time 3 people more senior to me had gone for it so they had their quota in our office for the year, I was told they would keep me in mind for the next year which would be april 2016 but when I approached my manager he said they it was not available anymore, is this nationwide?

Buy downs usually come about because of a revision, looking at other threads over the next 5 years there will be plenty of them so my advice is hang in there.

if what Dingo has posted, happens, then I'll be amazed if they don't offer buy downs. If they get the 20 new super sorting machines and all indoor time disappears they won't need quite so many FTimers or Posties. The only question is will MTSF survive as it is long enough.

What do we want from any agreed changes?

First and foremost the union has to adopt a plan A which is the changes are unacceptable. However, as history shows stopping automation is never a successful option and we must have a plan B in our minds if, so we need to consider the price for this change.

Clearly there will be job losses with Royal Mail's strategy. We need to avoid compulsory redundancies at all costs. Therefore MTSF would have to still be in place and the recent changes made to above 55's reinstated.

If changes were to take place, members should be able to make informed choices.

There must be a significant reduction in the working week with the aim over 5 years to establish a gross 35 hour working week (without loss of pay).

The average age of an OPG in the UK is 47 years of age. A huge amount find that a 4 hour delivery span is too difficult now and some will reject 6 hours out of hand but cannot afford to leave the business on VR so could there be more attractive buy down terms available?

I thought that HMRC had insisted that tax and NI had to be paid on any sum as the actual job was not being made redundant. Also most under the roof time in DOS can now be absorbed so I suppose RM see the bigger picture ahead and wouldn't make an offer whilst the current talks are talking place. Our office, which only has 20 delivery walks, only spent a total of 180 minutes on IPS on Monday, by the time the IPS was finished the double preppers had virtually had all walks thrown off. Whilst it would make sense for Royal Mail to increase the effeciency indoors,with fewer people on the sorting,it's clear that technology is going to make a full time duty longer on delivery so the new few months and the 'pipeline pillar of security' that Terry Pullinger refers to in the video will no doubt answer your question.
