Think I started with RM in 2000. Not really that long back. Most Dom's then had worked their way up, & knew what went on at 'pavement level'. It was always a tradition that on pre holiday deliveries such as Christmas Eve the managers would stay in the office till the 'last man walking' was back. They would even come out & give a hand, especially to newbies, so that everyone would finish on, or near, their time.
Xmas Eve 2015. A former manager & myself arrived back at the office after our rounds, to find it empty, apart from a 20 hour contract person who had been left to answer the phone & deal with the Caller Office.
Where were the managers? The DOM had left late morning, the Asst. DOM shortly after.

Yes, those days are long gone. We had a great manager in the good old days. If we did a second delivery on overtime ( around 2 hours docket for maybe 12 letters ), he would always say "don't forget to add on a 40 minute meal relief". I kid you not !

Yes, the DOM managers we've had over the last few years seem to spend their time covering the office walls in laminates of fiddled figures, calling people who are on leave/rotation/sick to try & persuade them to come in, & delivering WTL lectures with a straight face...Oh, & suffering Man Flu on Saturdays, leaving some pathetic trainee Asst. DOM to cope.
The current DOM's favourite line is offering to buy paracetamol for those off sick if they'll come in!
One of his predecessors was apparently overheard telling a 20 hour contract temp (who he'd put on a full time job) that if he claimed overtime it might go against him when he applied for a permanent job...That DOM used to accuse staff of 'taking money out of his wallet' when they claimed overtime, & turned up to work in a £70k Merc.
Whilst I'm on a rant, what is it about DOM's & big German cars - the last 3 have had the Merc, his successor an Audi, & the most recent a very expensive BMW.

Gave me good laugh this most managers leave the building before lunch and email that the office is all clear by 12 what a joke
