banning strikes
its just been on the news that the government are considering banning strikes on the railways after train drivers are to strike today tomorrow and Friday! how can they do that? do they have that power? and if so, how long will it be before it comes round to us the CWU? Not that we want to strike of course, but for them to take away our bargaining rights is completely out of order.

A law is only a law if its enforceable - and banning 70+k workers from rightfully withdrawing their labour in an industrial dispute is not enforceable. They may or may not put it on the statute books but its no more a law than a rule that bans torrent downloads.
Its an aspiration of TPTB - thats all.
We have the collective strength and the power, not them - let them ban what they want.

The only problem with that jet is that they tend to come after the union, not the 70k+ members. Their plan isn't to stop people walking out, that part as you say is unenforceable. The real plan is to silence the unions or see them bankrupt if they dare organise an "unlawful" strike. Why worry about the union? If you've ever tried to organise anything bigger than a children's party you'll understand.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - cryptocurrency.fishtank wrote: The real plan is to ..... see them bankrupt if they dare organise an "unlawful" strike.
If having union funds sequestrated is a real threat - and I have no doubt that you are right in that regard - then eventually someone will wise up to bitcoin. Bitcoin is here to stay.
The difference between holding funds in a high street bank and having it stored in cryptocurrency is that with cryptocurrency only you have the controlling keys to that money - and not, for eg, the govt. or the bank.
Big difference. Massive difference.
It is our money FFS. No-one has access to my personal BTC, and no-one has the means to gain access to it. No-one. They could clear out my bank account tommorrow, my pension fund etc - but no-one can touch my BTC.
I'm not suggesting that the union should plunge all our money into crypto - but for Gods sake, shouldn't someone be looking into it/investigating it. Its rather important stuff this. The union having secured control of its own money is the difference between all its members having the independance to act in their own interests, and not. Being posh slaves, in other words.

The CWU is already morally bankrupt. it does not act, yet it takes our funds.fishtank wrote:The only problem with that jet is that they tend to come after the union, not the 70k+ members. banning strikes
The Government have bought in stricter employment laws under the Trade Union. They might talk about banning strikes but with the small majority they have I doubt will try and put new legislation through parliament as they have got enough problems dealing with Brexit.
Now you suggest that the CWU is morally bankrupt why ?
Accrington Delivery office out on strike with full CWU support last Saturday and again this Saturday over bullying management ! Post Office LImited out on strike defending their pensions , fighting to have a future ! The CWU defending the future of the 2500 who work in that industry they would be destroyed if the CWU was not leading them.
Now let's be clear there are problems in the workplace but let's be clear the employer would rip apart our terms and conditions if it was not for the CWU and the membership.
As it is Royal Mail wanted to announce the closure of the DB pension scheme which 90 thousand postmen/ women and managers are in before Christmas the threat of strike action stopped them but they will announce it in the New Year ! The offer is that they transfer all members of the DB into a DC scheme and dropping their Pension contributions from 17.1% to 10%.
This equates to a reduction of £28 per employee and will mean the overwhelming majority of employees will have a reduced pension.
Additionally the talks will include later starts , flexibility, using PDA''s , Trimble and the new data capture to record start , finishing and performance standard for all OPGs. Add this to the fact that the CWU want to extend the legal guarantees and the shareholder and Royal Mail would like to outsource to a cheaper workforce some of the which OPGs do now linked to why OPGs get paid for the hours they do the talks are very challenging.
Of course the next pay round and the CWU's claim for a reduction in the working week with no reduction in pay is also part of the talks.
Why is the CWU wanting a reduction in the working week because of increasing automation. The machine which was trialled in Exeter Delivery Office and removed nearly all the IPS and Prep will have a massive impact and Royal Mail have ordered another 11 machines. In Exeter as a result of the new automation a further 50 part timers are being suggested.
So next year the only group who is going to defend post workers is the CWU and hopefully the members will fight as the vast majority CWU members have always done.
You only have to look at Amazon, Sports Direct , Hermes , Argos to see how much better our conditions are and that is because we have a union.
