Getting your own walk.

Postman A is full time and the most senior reserve, postman B is part time and a relative newbie to the business.
In their wisdom the powers that be decided to declare some walks part time (actual delivery time is the same for ft and pt, the difference is indoor work).
Postman B has signed for one of these pt walks but due to lack of ft staff there was no one to prep it for him so he has been coming in on ot to prep it himself.
So now the aforementioned powers are thinking that maybe they should make postman B up to full time and he will still retain this walk.
Is this correct as surely postman A should have the opportunity to sign for the walk based on seniority or should postman B go to ft reserve and the walk goes to the most senior pt postie ?

Your thoughts ?

PS I am neither postman A or B, it comes from a conversation whilst working with someone from a different office.

it's moot as walk-only is a 20/22.5 hrs per week contact. To prep and walk only is a 30/32.5 hrs. per week contract. Anything over 32.5/33 hrs. per week is prep/walk AND do some indoor work such as IPS/Frame etc.

So to prep and walk why would they need a 39-hrs contract?

Surely they would be made up to 32.5/33 so the FT postie A would not feel conned?

If you can't prep and walk-only a round on a 32.5/33 hrs. contract then there's something wrong with you.

Not sure of the full details on the hours as not my office but I presume postie B must be doing more than prepping his own walk. In our place some of the walks are paired up ft/pt and have 30 hr pt staff come in @ 0830 faff about for a bit and then off they go with a ft buddy who has prepped both walks, finishing together @ 1430 (that's the theory anyway). Other walks have 2 x ft staff starting @ 0630 with one doing IPS and the other throws off the 2 walks.
I think that the main point was that Postie A was a bit miffed that a newbie had got his own walk and to rub salt in the wound there is now the possibility of postie B being made up to full time whilst he remains a reserve getting moved all over the place.

In that case postie B should b e made up to 32.5/33 (still PT and assuming he's on less hours at present) and do the frame/IPS or whatever as OT? Then the FT postie A is still more favourably treated.

If you are made up to full time then you will be a reserve the first reserve should get first choice or they have every right to take it up with the manager.

Depends on whether this "newbie" partimer is the most senior part-timer. And if they are, doubt they would then be most senior full-timer. Also would walk still remain "part-time". RM do like to make things easy.
