Apparently after just a couple of days off sick one of the newer guys in our office was contacted at home and asked to attend a one to one with his manager. Can they do this, what is the purpose of the meeting etc etc. Can anyone comment on why RM do this now - seems a bit OTT.

Nope.
Self certificate for upto 7 days, but keep in contact with the DOM.

some of these DOM will use the one to one to intimidate you to return to work before you are ready

after 7 days the DOM may request a face to face but if you are unable to make it into the office, invite him round yours or to a coffee shop etc.

Self certify up to 7 days yes, but you're not entitled to sick pay until you've been there a year I THINK, so I don't know if that changes sick entitlement in general for newer staff.

There is a chance that the guy is blatantly at it too though, there's a lot of that in my office. Of course the dom has his favourites and thus there's a few that are off "sick" a few days out of every month and are never questioned on it....

They may just fall under the Equality Act, if so, other employees should neither know they are or be informed as to the reaons why. It also means that general discussion, even on a forum, can lead to trouble if people feel they are being subject to discrimination.

They may be chancers out there, undoubtedly there is but you have to be careful.

The answer, i believe, is yes Management CAN request a 1-1 interview. This was something that was agreed with the CWU about 2 or 3 years ago. It is basically a return to work and as such informal. The option remains for a CWU rep, or colleague to accompany the individual should they so wish.

The manager CAN indeed request a 1-1 interview but the official line on this is you DO NOT have to attend a 1-1 interview unless you have been off for a total of 28 consecutive days or more.
This is within the official attendance agreement and never let them bully you into a 1-1 meeting before you have to.
A point of contact is to be made every few days agreed by manager and employee for short term,For example every 3 days via phone call,Email or text updating on condition.

6. How should contact be made while an employee is away from work due to illness?
Employees have a responsibility to notify their manager as soon as possible before the beginning of their shift or usual work start time in accordance with local arrangements for their office or work location. The employee should advise the manager of the reason for their absence, the likely duration and anticipated return date. Where the employee’s absence is going to be longer than a few days then the manager and the employee should agree how they will remain in contact during the period of absence. This would include the level of contact, how often and the method by
which contact will take place, for example this could be by email or telephone conversation. Where the absence is not likely to last more than a few days further contact should not normally be necessary. Where the absence is longer term it is recommended that contact should be maintained on a weekly basis throughout the period of absence.

No manager should be bullying people to come in for a `chat`.
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

Totally agree General! :Applause Had a particularly thick Reserve Manager looking after our office for a while. I phoned in sick with V & D. He phoned me back and said, "I'll be popping around today to visit you". Thanks to this forum I knew the score and basically quoted this item. He had to wind his neck in sharpish.Really annoyed me when he said, "I don't have to arrange a meeting I'll come around when ever I want". These Idiots shouldn't be put in charge of a School Crossing! :cuppa

Ive known posties that have rung in sick and the DOM has been on the phone asking what's wrong with them and even when staff clearly don't feel very well, they are still goading them by saying stuff like "you won't be classed as being on sick absence if you still come in and deliver a few loops"

They will pull out all the stops to make the office figures look good as per sick absence and get staff back to work ASAP
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
