managers!!
I remember back in the day, it may have been around 2003, that the government first looked into the idea of privatising the royal mail, so they asked this lord to look at the problems that would arise going forward, one of the things he came out with, and I remember it clearly... royal mail do not have the managers to EFFECT CHANGE!!! and by lord!!! didn't he get it spot on, I understand these managers of all levels are under pressure from above, but decent managers stand their ground, it's a pity, we do not have any!!!!

I think you should have to be a postie at ground level & work your way up the ladder to becoming a manager. These clowns come in with a degree thinking they know it all because it says so on their spreadsheet. Tho with the pressure to hit targets & save budgets you'd maybe end up with the same couldnt care a less attitude.

I have a dream. In this dream, Royal Mail will do whats right by the business and the people in the business and then charge what it takes to run it smoothly without causing the staff major stress and headf*ck. There will be 1 full time postman per walk. We would not have to scrounge for rubber bands or satchels. New posties would not get passed from walk to wak and office to office while they are getting used to the job. Oh god, got to stop. Useless waste of time. I'd have more chance of wining Euromillions.

I honestly don't understand what the 3-4 managers do in our d.o. (60 duties)... the phg/dom support deals with all the day to day staffing issues, overtime, arranging vehicle maintenance, training etc etc
All the managers seem to be responsible for is sickness/absence issues and very occasional coaching/disciplinary matters.

You're forgetting the prepping of walks, putting d2d in frames, pushing yorks around, collecting up purstops and delivering bits of lapsing we can't manage!wacko74 wrote:I honestly don't understand what the 3-4 managers do in our d.o. Managers are easy to spot. They are the ones that cant stand still without leaning against a Yorkie.

Not here they don't... in my previous D.O. there was 1 manager for 25 duties and they did have to do lots of OPG work, but at my new D.O. the 3-4 managers do none of that.rambo1 wrote:You're forgetting the prepping of walks, putting d2d in frames, pushing yorks around, collecting up purstops and delivering bits of lapsing we can't manage!wacko74 wrote:I honestly don't understand what the 3-4 managers do in our d.o. Makes no odds,The ones that start at the bottom soon forget what it is like,Royal mail managers have it drummed into them to bully and harrass,If im wrong then they are just c***s of life.stephen.cal87 wrote:I think you should have to be a postie at ground level & work your way up the ladder to becoming a manager. I actually feel sorry for the line managers, most of them couldn't handle being posties so they crossed the line and now they can't handle the pressure from above. It's a hard life. I certainly wouldn't want their job, they couldn't pay me enough.

But ex-postie managers know nothing other than "that's the way it's always been done" and that's a big part of why RM is so inward-looking and stagnant, and unable to react and adapt to change.stephen.cal87 wrote:I think you should have to be a postie at ground level & work your way up the ladder to becoming a manager. Degree entrants often aren't much better, but that's because they're usually 2:2 graduates (RM being one of the few companies who accept 2:2's) who couldn't get the career they really wanted due to their piss-poor degree grades, and had to settle for the poorly-trained mundanity of being an RM manager.
Imagine being some hopeful bright-eyed kid and being snowed under with whines about "where's my new shoes?" "can I have Christmas off this year?" and "why does old Bert always get to finish early?".
It would do anyone's enthusiasm in pretty short order.

The issue isn't line managers, they are after all just (overpaid) team leaders with very little scope to make any serious decisions, they are there precisely to deal with the mundane complaints of the frontline staff.
The problems really lie with DOMs and above many of whom have been promoted well beyond their capabilities and are handling budgets and staff numbers that medium sized businesses would deal with. Many of them have been around since the days of Adam, have no serious business training or experience, some have serious educational deficiencies and most are well aware that outside the business they wouldn't last five minutes so have perfected survival techniques inside the business.
As Tman points out our degree entrant system is very poor and the fact that the business seems to think that throwing these guys onto the floor of a DO will somehow give them a grounding in how royal mail works is embarrassing. Nobody needs to know how to deliver mail in order to run a delivery office professionally, that's what line managers are for . The last thing the business needs is someone pushing Yorks about at £45k p.a.

We have them covering ours. Lazy postmen who ran off to be managers once the work became to hard for them. They then tar you with their own brush.... " Iknow all the tricks, I know this duty " (even though it has changed and been extended 3 times) . Then you tell them that you know what tricks they used to pull and that you had to pick up their slack as their floater time after time. Then they tell you " come on " MATE " scratch ny back, I'll do you a favour" they were never my "MATE" and they never have or will do me a favour.stephen.cal87 wrote:I think you should have to be a postie at ground level & work your way up the ladder to becoming a manager. no-one has mentioned the graduate managers - the ones parachuted into positions when 6 months ago the hardest thing they had to do was beg for an extension for a late essay
No matter what you think of managers that have come up the ranks nothing with ever compare with the horror of a graduate manager - we have a new one training he hides in the office on his computer and actively avoids talking to anyone - he's gonna be a singleton DOM :-) we are currently taking bets on how many days he lasts when he gets there
