Hi
I ve always fancied having a go at postman, I got offered a position around a year and a bit ago and was over the moon! I still really enjoy the job but I am have a query!
I m part time(ha) reserve who after a year + has been stuck on the same duty whilst other reserves /new starters get to try different rounds!
The round I am on is know as a heavy/problem round which no one is willing to do
It is supposed to have 1 full timer and a part timer on it
I go on early to do the large packets every morning on o/t or prep it when needed
I seem to be the part timer who has inherited the full timers responsibility of prep/organising the round /estimating how long we ll be over etc and who ever they choose to place with me usually another part timer
We are due a partial re sign may be Jan been waiting over 6+ months for this to happen so far ! A few members of staff have now been given opportunity of full time and I think they are still on there part time duties!
I may be wrong but was informed I may be able to sign for the above metioned round may be on full time hrs due to time I ve been on it?!(seniority or not?!)is this correct?
I have requested to be moved to other duties but have been told 'I m to efficient on the duty I m on (i.e. It's always clear !) don t kick off about it blah blah!)
I just want to enjoy my job
Any advice please a rather stressed Postie!

Get another job. No ones allowed to enjoy working for RM any more and anyone found enjoying it will be put on a stage warning!
Union what Union? Do we have a union?

lol that's not very constructive!! Sad as it sounds I really do still enjoy the job and it still is a challenge/goal to clear that walk each day for some strange reason ! Perhaps I care to much about my work! I have never yet managed to not complete my adopted/inherited duty and still take pride in that On a more serious note any help would be appreciated how ever small you may feel it is

You have been fortunate that as a p/t reserve you have managed to secure consistent f/t hours either by your efficiency on this duty or the fact that no one else wants it which has been to your advantage and given financial stability where other postie reserves may not have been considered.
This duty having remained vacant for a year+ should have been advertised after 6 months as per the Way Forward Agreement but management are getting this duty covered without having to include your regular F/T hours in your holiday pay and only give your contractual hours a small saving at the moment on their part.
Your question on a resign becoming imminent should you automatically receive this duty due to the length of time you have covered it. This then brings me to a further to points (1) Under the Agenda for Growth and Stability Agreement your contractual hours should have been reviewed after 6 months in consultation between union and management to reflect the hours that you have worked for the possibility of an increase. This would be dependant on the office budget and the situation with other p/t employees in your resourcing unit. (2) You can with assistance from your CWU rep prior to the partial resign argue your position on " CUSTOM AND PRACTICE" if this still applies and does in fact supersede seniority but I am not 100% sure on this and maybe others on this site can enlighten me on this matter.

Thank you for your input, I just would like to know where I stand as I don't want to create to many waves
I did speak to one of the managers who now is somewhere else a while back my contracted hours were originally 20 which has now been upped to 25 hours as have all the other new starters/reserves
I appreciate that it's nice to have consistent hours and same walk the one thing I guess is bothering me is that all the newer starters are learning more routes and walks where I am only any help to RM on that particular walk if that makes sense

You can't inherit a duty through "custom and practice", the truth is it should have gone to the senior reserve until a repick, if he/she didn't want it...then the next senior reserve etc. I suppose if no one ahead of you wants it you could end up with it but it might not necessarily still be a full-time duty in the next repick.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share
