Tomorrow our office has no manager. The Dom is off sick long term, the deputy manager is on annual leave and the cover manager from a local office said it was his day off !!! What are the implications re this, surely there should be a duty of care by Royal Mail to ensure that someone is available.

Once again where is the duty of care??

Someone, either the rep, locker staff or Coach will be designated as PIC (person in charge) for when the manager is absent. That person(s) will cover the H&S implications of Duty of Care etc. They should also receive an allowance whilst they are actively carrying out this duty.

Sounds ideal to me, most problems you can resolve yourself, without recourse to a manager, as someone else pointed out the job will probably run a lot smoother. It's only because free, independent thinking is not allowed, because of Royal Mail's, Command and Control freakery, that you think you need a manager, no you don't. Enjoy the silence , as Depeche Mode once warbled.

That's interesting, as I cover the locker,do all phg duties, and lockup on Saturday's and no mention off any additional allowance has ever been raised. I have been doing this duty for the last five years. What's the chance of getting this in future? Is there any sort of agreement somewhere?

Duty of care? Thing is, when it comes to their workforce, they just couldn't give a flying f**k.

I worked nights in a delivery office with no manager. One person got paid an allowance for unlocking on a Sunday night. Don't know if he officially had other responsibilities but in practice that's all he really had to do. Worth about £30 a week. And, yes, in my opinion , we worked better with no manager around.

We are often without a DOM, that doesn't bother me. What does bother me is...... How can you use the correct Over Running Procedure when there's not a DOM to inform you'll be finishing on time? :hmmmm

You might say, "Just leave it in the frame and don't worry about it" but knowing my luck we'd have a snap audit and I'd get the sack for delaying the mail!

No there has to be a contact in place to organise routes etc. should anything unforeseen occur for instance staff phoning in sick at short notice. Allocating and authorising O/T. BTW interviews. Monitoring staff on adjusted duties. Staff starting and finishing times. Fire drill etc. Building security arrangements.

Out in SPDOs a manager might be seen once every Preston Guild  but that doesn't mean all the mail doesn't get delivered. :cuppa :thumbup
