OVER RUNNING PROCEDURE, AGAIN

Post by dodgyinlaws »

We have no office rep so i would appreciate some feedback please. Current practice by management in our office is when staff inform them that they are unwilling to work beyond their time management tell staff to take their break, management then tie up mail and where a HCT is involved pack the trolley. Management are doing this when lapsing is also involved, also management use other staff to tie up the duty holders mail and load trolley whilst the duty holder is told to take their break. Can a manager tell me to take my break and then use other staff or themselves to tie up and pack our trolley.

Themselves...is an almost definite no no (but then I believe there is a clause about protecting the USO)
Other people...probably technically OK, "as directed" is a nice little clause.
But then whether its done by a manager or OPG I suspect they will have tied up and packed your trolley in a different way to how you would usually do it, thus causing further delay as you can't find what you need easilly, or you end up repeatedly going back on yourself because the bundles end in a different place to where you would expect...this would add even more time on to the duty or, at best cancelling out anytime they think they have saved so you still need to cut off.

Does having it all tied up for you mean that you can complete on time? I find it a bit hard to believe myself. It would only save a short while when you take into account the searching through the trolley for packets and sorting out the inevitable dodgy bundling, as mentioned above.

They can tell you when to take your break, and get other staff to bundle it up for you. On the rare occasions that has happened for me, the duty has taken much longer to complete so I can't see the system working as they would hope.

I would just do as instructed, and inform them should you become aware that you will not be able to complete on time, despite their 'assistance'.

what managers know and pretend not to realise is that if you have got more mail and packets then it doesn't really matter how much assistance you have got indoors, because unless you get assistance outdoors, then you will probably fail to complete in time. And you are not compelled to work past your time.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

It's subtle harassment. Designed to make you look bad in the light of your colleagues. :thumbdown
I wouldn't go to the management until you have bundled up.

Thank them for the help inform the manager you may not have time to complete but you will do your best. Part time is not working we are getting out too late if every postie worked to rule it would be chaos. The top management need to rethink or the service will get worse and we will lose our good name. We need extra staff on Wednesdays for the packets. The S/D service is not as good as it should be I used to get rid of most of them when we were going out at 7.30 to do them now they are going out with normal mail and most workers have left for work.

of course they can do it. Its saving you that 40 minutes of work while you take your break so it is on the face of it efficient. Whether it makes a walk then completable or not is another matter.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think they can only make you take 20 mins before you go out and you have the right to take the rest at the end of duty.

My understanding of meal relief is that we are required to take 20 minutes before we go out then 20 minutes whilst on delivery. I certainly wouldn't take my full 40 minutes before i went out, regardless of management instruction. Also are other staff in your office instructed to take their full 40 minutes before leaving the office, or does this only apply to you? This seems to be nothing more than an insidious form of bullying.

They asked me to take 40 minutes before delivery, i said no, some of the other members of staff they have persuaded to take 40, i have told them to take 20 as that is the law and take the rest at the end of the shift, one lino heard me say this and all i can say is 'i can feel the love'

youre right but its a bit messy, maybe someone can clear it up. I think they *could* make everyone take their full 40 min break if they wanted to at a "fair time" much like any other workplace. However, if theyre discriminating and making some take a full 40 minutes whilst others dont have to I think theres a real issue here that could be argued.
