Later starts and finishes

Trying to accommodate One Wave, I.E all mail from MCC will come into DLO's in one 17.5 tonne wagon. Supposedly 90% Walk sorted and then you " desk top merge " the rest, I.E Drop packets and non sorted items in as you tie up or on the go.

Most DLO's if they can accommodate a bigger wagon ( No 600's ) will get their mail about 10 in the morning. They reckon they wont need any IPS work , so later starts and later finishes, Including Saturday.

Thing is this achieves a saving for Distribution, but it achieves no saving for Delivery, so they ll be a conflict between departments.

Far as I m concerned until 2018 my contract is 0600-1400, so they can bring the mail in when they want, I ll be cutting off! Unless my colleagues in the CWU decide to agree a change for a few dollars more.

They also want the pipe line open until 1900 hours . So they can compete on next day delivery for packets, So God knows what actual hours the MCC's will be working.

From what I understand the savings in delivery will come from hardly any IPS meaning a lot less time inside and longer delivery spans resulting in less walks and therefore less staff.

Think you'll find you have no actual start, finish contract hrs, just the actual time span. Last letter at 4pm is the limiting factor unless changed but they can make your duty 8-4pm if they want.

Your right about the last letter thing, protecting the USO , Would be good if someone with more knowledge ( Blue Terrier ) could state whether these times can be changed without Agreement.

Its not quite as hard and fast as a "Yes they can" or "No they can't".

Changing times without an agreement is Executive Action which goes against current agreements so if it happens a rep should put in a disagreement.

However, the law does allow a change of contract with reasonable notice, and if people work under the new contract its seen as acceptance. Although there are processes you can use to work under the new contract under duress.

They'll still be IPS work as DOs will still have to sort manual letters and flats to the walks and there'll always be some mail that gets rejected by the machines. Probably at least a 3rd of DOs won't get their sequenced mail in time for it to be delivered the same day that it arrives in the DO.

The reality is terms and conditions are changed frequently over your employment, mostly by agreement but sometimes against your wishes, a change in start/ finish times is not something you could take to an employment tribunal if the business can show a commercial reason for the change, the only exception might be if you feel it discriminates against you with respect to a protected characteristic.

As there are national negotiations on the matter ultimately our union will come back to us and say" this is what the company wish to do and this is what it means to you all , now what do you want to do about it" and if we say no we ain't having it then we take em on. All this talk about they can do this they can do that is a weak attitude to adopt if we let em they will do what they like to us so let's start being positive and strong.
