the 'sweetener' to change all contracts to driving duties.

Heard this rumoured a few times to be coming in next year.
Basically if you drive for Royal Mail and have been in before you HAD to drive your contract is supposed to be getting altered next year to include driving work.

Now, this is still the drivers choice to so this, and if they want to to change that, surely there should be some sort of (usually derisory) offer made?

In time it will we are all monitored now if we have the new PDA's like never before just like amazon and dpd you need to realise this before you can think how many hours can be saved with the new technology that has been invested by royal mail. It is just a question of time for the lazy and arrogant few who will use this to their advantage so they can live a good retirement of the backs of us all!

Yes eventually. RM want us to operate more like couriers, timed deliveries/collecting from residential customers.

So we currently have circa 33'000 vehicles on the fleet. Don't know the break down as to how many of these are actually just delivery vans, or 600's or 17.5 tonners.

But lets say that figure is just the Vans we do deliveries in! My DLO uses at least 60 for deliveries in the mornings of which 75% are Van share Park and Loop, and then about a Dozen for Collections in the afternoons.

So if we all went solo we would need to find at least another 40- 50 vans to cover the deliveries; Unless a move to six hour deliveries would reduce the park and loop walks.

One of the biggest costs to the business after paying us is Fleet Management, Why would they look to extend the amount of Drivers?

Because it's all about parcels now.

And to eliminate the vast amount of time wasted waiting for the other person to return to the van.

And maybe because they think non-drivers aren't doing their share.

Well yeah, assuming the introduction of 6+ hour deliveries, this will decrease the actual amount of deliveries and thus headcount. So whilst extra vans would be required, they would pay for themselves many times over in the salary savings. Deliveries at our place are officially 4hrs.15mins, but lets say 4hrs. to keep it simple. Move to 6hr deliveries and they would be able to remove just under 1/3 of the duties and workforce.

And those of us left to pick up the pieces will be on the scrapheap in no time at all. Scary times!

Why would anyone who doesn't drive want to be trained to drive for Royal Mail? The pressure and aggro piled on drivers is ridiculous. You have an accident and Royal Mail automatically assumes your guilt before innocence! What happens if you fail the test?

We were told today any incidents with the vans if its your fault or not your getting sent home until its investigated.

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the ultimate aim is to go down the road of franchising off the walks so we're effectively self-employed, as most other couriers currently do.
