Absent from service.

Hello all.
Just a quick bit of help.
One of our chaps got ill abroad and has had his wages stopped for two weeks for being' Absent from Service' I think that was the term used.
This is a new one on me to be honest. Does anyone have a link to the guidelines ?

i wouldn't be surprise if it isn't down to a lack of doctors cert covering their absence.
Ask the DOM why they have done this then assuming this absence is genuine bypass local manager and get your area rep to go to the DSM. Once the individual gets the cert into work all money will or at least should be backdated.

I have heard of AWOL ( Absent Without Leave) and also Abandonment of Duty so this is the same difference. Unless he shouldn't have been abroad in the first place it seems that his annual leave has been extended due to him becoming ill when on holiday. If he has been hospitalised while on holiday or received medical treatment he should be able to provide documentation to support this and should follow the same procedure if becoming ill in the UK by contacting RM of the situation and have medical certificates to cover the extended period of absence. If all above board then the stoppage of wages is extreme and this will have to involve the local union rep to take this matter up. If RM have been fully informed of the circumstances in relation to the absence then he can be credited with the days lost due to his illness.

Blimey, the moment they informed me that my wages were being stopped would be the same moment that I withdrew my labour until it was reinstated. Following a bust up with a manager in 2011 he informed me that he was stopping my wages. I walked out of the DO that same minute, went to the GPs, got a certificate for stress. Informed Area Rep of situation, who had been helping me out with grievance against same manager. Following ARs chat with DSM following day, wages were immediately reinstated and I got a week off on the sick. Strangely enough prat of a manager disappeared from the DO within a few weeks. These people can only manage by bullying and you cannot allow them to get away with it.
