I have a painful foot and told my manager first thing I may not be able to complete my walk if it got any worse. After being there for over 2 hours doing indoor duties I was told if I couldn't guarantee I could complete the full thing I would have to go home sick, even though it was my last day before a week off on leave and I'd already worked my day off that week and I'd been working 2 and half hours that morning. I was also told I would have to have a back to work interview on my return and it could go towards a possible stage if I was off again in the future, is this correct ?

You need to inform your manager I believe that you are fit to return to work before you start your leave or it will continue as sick absense, mind you, that would mean you can claim your leave back but you would need a certificate after 7 days.

Beggs the question why are you working your day off with a bad foot? Is it an injury that occurred after you worked your day off? If not, you're not gonna get much sympathy from management for working a day you could /should have been resting it and leaving them in the poo on the day you should be there when they have no cover for you.

After advising your manager that you had a painful foot the manger then required from you that you would complete your walk which you could not give. By not getting a guarantee from you that you would finish your duty the manger advised that you would have to go home sick his/her decision not yours although it would be hard to prove that this was said to you becoming your word against the manger that you would have to go home. I am assuming that you signed on for your duty that day and signed out when you left the office so you will have proof that you attempted to work to finish. Normally you would have to have completed 50% of your hours for this to be regarded as a half day absence but this would be argued if RM decided to include this absence in their calculation for the attendance procedure. As other posts have stated and you are about to commence your leave you will have to inform your manager if off sick or you are coming off sick and continuing on to your leave, RM would need to have a very strong reason for including your part absence in a stage warning and what you have stated they don't.

According to this going home after 1 hour is a part day absence.

http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... 06#p434255" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
If an employee arrives at work but after 1 hour or more felt too ill to continue working and so went home this would constitute a part day absence.

There is no blanket requirement for self certificates for part day absences or Doctors/Dentists appointments which cannot be taken outside working hours,although with the latter appointment cards should be shown/made available.

Where managers have reasonable grounds to suspect that abuse by an individual is taking place or the frequency becomes unacceptable then self-certification may be required.The employee concerned will be told in advance that this will be a future requirement and that such absences may count towards triggering stage warnings.

Warnings will not be triggered based on part day absences unless the employee has been asked to certify such absences and informed that they will count in future.
