ungrateful customer

was sorting the packets in the van last week when a woman came up and asked if I could help her with her car, the battery was dead and asked if I would give her a jump start. I said I knew nowt about motors but the driver would help when he got back from his loop. so sure enough my mate helped her. the car still wouldn't start after trying to jump it so he told her the battery was knackered and he ended up pushing it down the road and bump started it for her. off she went and we though no more about it. today, my mate gets called into the office.....she's complained, saying he's f****d her battery and burned out her jump leads.!! the dom says someone from her insurance had been on the phone enquiring about compensation. needless to say my driver was gobsmacked. he explained everything to the dom and he says don't help anyone else. jeez. it had his blood boiling....what a cow!!

What an awful excuse for a human being. Surely the insurance company would find that the poor postie didn't bugger her battery? Tbh, her excess is probably much more than the price of a new battery!

I'm getting worked up about this woman myself, I can't believe that there are people this petty about.

Hold on - maybe he did f**k up the battery. If he put the jump leads on the wrong way round (his responsibility if he was doing it) then he could well have fried the other battery and that would explain the damage to the jump leads.

What way round did he attach the leads?

I think anyone with half a brain knows to check that positive goes on positive and negative goes on negative, if you tried to put it on the wrong way round all you would get is a bit of spark telling you're doing it wrong and no damage.

Definitely a con by somebody who doesn't know about cars.

If the one battery is flat then there won't be any sparks if connected incorrectly, but if the flat car starts then yes there will be problems, but is this getting off topic?

Fair play for wanting to help but unfortunately that's a sign of the times...

No that's not off topic. As you said if the other battery is fully discharged/dead there will be no sparks and the current from the other car will simply start melting the plates in the dead battery making it unserviceable.

Sounds like this is what happened as the BUMP (push) started the car there was obviously nothing wrong with anything on it apart from the battery. As the JUMP should therefore have started it there is only one conclusion in the face of this lady's complaint - the JUMP was not attempted correctly.

'So what he tried to help' Err if you damage someones property through negligence you are liable!!!! Don't mess about with someones property unless you know what the hell you are doing!!!

I was once similarly asked to help and provided an ending running and open bonnet, the other driving dealing with his jump leads and battery.
That's the limit of my assistance.
