Union Elections

Post by barkersboy »

Why do we vote for people we dont know. Most members of the union dont know Dave from Billy. What they vote for is the recommendations from the branches. So the branch officers are responsible for union leaders.
There now has to be some other form of influencing the membership.
I have heard a lot of good vibes for Bob Gibson and I know nothing about him.
The leader of Liverpool wildcats (apologise for not recalling his name) seems to be someone who stands for his members.
The point is, " we dont know adam from Eve".
Any suggestions where we go from here?
Nobody wants another Billy & Dave act.

What else can we do?

I know what you mean. The only time I know anything other than what the candidates tell us, is when they have already done the job previously.

But the only other choice would be to not vote at all, and that would be worse.

I read through the booklet, and as soon as I see a candidate is a member of the Labour Party, they've lost my vote. I'm suspicious of any trade unionist remaining in membership of the Labour Party ten years after Bliar and Brown and their refusal to repeal any of the anti-trade union laws Thatcher and Tebbit passed.
The Industrial Workers of the World. The union whose members never scab!

well Lads I'm new to Royalmailchat but but in any future Election I expect to get an informed view of the candidates here, which will help to cut through the bull.
Maybe then we'll get the right man for the Job.

maybe in future elections, the candidates could come to our local areas and canvass for our votes?

Dave certainly knows the ins and outs of life at the sharp end, having joined the Post Office as a telegram boy straight from school, working 43 hours a week for the princely sum of £26.

"I took on responsibility in my branch from the age of 20, and became branch secretary at the age of 23, so I've had a thorough grounding in all the issues affecting members."

Aware that the media may link his election to the success of left-leaning union leaders in recent months, Dave says: "If membership of the so-called 'awkward squad' means placing a firm emphasis on improving pay and conditions for union members then I'm happy to be associated with that. As far as links with Labour go, I 'm not persuaded at this stage by the disaffiliation argument. I just think that the union's strength is in what we decide, not what the Labour Party decides for us."

Anyone recognise the profile above?

The problem with that, is that they will only be telling us about themselves. What we really need, is what we have now. A chance to exchange information about these people, so that we know what they are actually like, from the people who know them.

Does it matter? If the face fits they'll be in and when they're out they'll be "found" something to keep them close.

If we have the neccessary information, we can make the CWU great again! :Very Happy :dance Until now, unless we actually know anything first hand about the candidates, we have had to rely on what we were told, and the recomendations. We have ended up with a bunch of fools, who are acting in secrecy, leading to unneccesary tension, and a reliance on rumors. :cuppa :d'oh! :arrrghhh

If we get the facts. We can vote for people who will do the job properly, keep us informed every step of the way, and won't waste so much time! :Applause :Very Happy :hmmmm

Don't forget. They have got their own way so far, because we didn't have enough information to make the right decisions. If we work together we can change the Union for the better. :hmmmm
