Dom says from October RM will be offering customers 'time specific' packet deliveries. i.e. people can ask to have their packets delivered at a time they want. wonder how they are going to pull this one off and whether the union will agree. anyone else get this today?

I thought that the whole time specific thing was going to be that customers would be notified at a certain time with a message saying "postie is at such and such a place and will be at yours at such and such a time" rather than them actually getting to choose? I haven't had wtl this week though

I remember hearing something along these lines a few months back when they were building up the hype about these fab new PDAs. As I understand it, the theory is that the devices captures the tracking data of previous delivery routes and then uses this information to foretell at what time you will be at a specific spot, and uses this info to tell the recipient of your imminent arrival. I suppose something along the lines of, 'Fred has just left on delivery at 9:07 and is expected to be arriving at your address at 13:46."

If that is the case, I don't think this is likely to work well. From my experience, delivery routes are rarely done in the exact same order for a number of reasons, and also it gives the recipient something extra to complain about when the postie is earlier or later then the prediction.

Don't say that. DOM's will be wetting themselves in anticipation. Another stick to beat us with.

Good point. We have two collections (and Specials to consider) before 13:00 and therefore alter the way the walk runs on a regular basis. So , it is no good saying that because we are at point X at Y time that we will be with customer at Z time.

We never heard anything about this but like WTT said, could only work with packet drivers, there's too many variables when delivering, most people know what time their regular postie arrives anyway, when you put someone on a walk who don't know it you have no chance of being able to tell what time you'll be where.

the video made me laugh though...it said people needed training on how to scan the 2d barcodes..."Press here, aim there" :chuckle

Yes, indeed, my delivery route is often not done in the exact same order for delivering Special Deliveries by 1pm.

Our place is now littered with A4 posters about the bloody barcodes. WTL brought up the fact that there are still many problems getting them to scan, but that is brushed aside as it is easier to blame us for not doing it.

You've also got to account for the rogue busy day which sees you not leave the office until an hour later than usual, or those Tuesdays where wtl goes on for ages because the manager likes to listen to his or her own voice far too much, or posties asking stupid questions at wtl. A colleague once decided to pipe up about letters in their walk sequenced trays being upside down, and sorters putting them into the IPS frame the wrong way round...

I change my loop deliveries quite often depending on various things like specials or Large parcels etc so cant see how that would work

Like it or not I can see RM splitting duties up into letters/large letters/d2d for some and anything else for the rest

You have stated your opinion on this a few a few times now, can you give us an idea of how the hell this would be cost effective or an efficient way of working :arrrghhh

I don't envisage RM going back to the old system of getting 2 posties to deliver the same streets, one with mail and one with anything bigger than that. Removing that wasted time and resources was the whole point of giving us vans. I think the opposite is more likely, myself - they'll give us bigger vans and then start to wonder why they still have Parcelforce on the books...
