Leaving mail to do lapsing instead!

In our office we are now being told by the DOM that if we don't have enough time to do our lapsing then we are to leave loops on our own duty to complete lapsing instead.
I always thought lapsing was there to fill your time which I don't have an issue with, if I have the time then i'll do it. Can you refuse to do the lapsing and complete your own duty instead?

Why would you want to? do the 20/25 calls of lapsing and leave a 60-100 call loop for the manager to pick up at the end of the day.

I'm pretty sure that the rules are that you can't refuse a management order, so long as it is something you are able to do (ie had training and equipment to do it). Once you are no longer within contracted hours then the situation changes. That is my understanding of it and that is why I think they often request you to do the lapsing first - many posties will do a few minutes of overtime to complete their 'own' duty but not to complete a part of someone else's.

email Moya and ask her , and send Bob Gibson one as he was the one who agrees all s**t with r/m . simple solution do the extra and take your own back as you have a finish time ,

20/25 calls ? Lapsing is either a full loop or 2 depending which day it is.

Manager picking up the loop? Mail is left in fittings across the office for duty holders to take the next day.

Yes I thought this was the case too. However i also thought that leaving mail was wilful delay

I reckon it's a psychological trick,they believe you won't want to leave mail on your own walk,so you'll complete. I don't where this "leave it for the manager to deliver", comes from,where I work,you end up with it all to do tomorrow.

For managers without reporting it, it is.

For both, if you have permission it ain't

Surely that's wilful delay?
Where I am the managers have to take out the cut offs if they can't get us to do it (wether that's official or not I don't know but that's what happens)

As for the lapsing I guess it depends how many walks get lapsed...we only ever have a max of 2 which works out about half a loop.

That may be what happens at your place but I'm pretty sure it shouldn't. Managers never deliver anything here, it's only on rare occasions one may move a york around. I hope the union guy would have a blue fit if managers started doing postman work here. Maybe they're just pretending that the office hasn't failed that day?

According to our union rep ( who's a great guy ) It's up to you whether you do your lapsing first or last...Personally I would do it last, I do not mind staying out 15-20 minutes to finish my walk, but there is no way I am staying out to do lapsing. Lapsing is designed ( so we have been informed ) to be "do-able " during your delivery time... ( yes on a Tuesday, rest of week at the moment no chance ! ) Yet in our office the same old mentality ( we gotta make sometime an get done early attitude still applies ) let's rush round like idiots and do it. And still the twats get back early to the office, especially on a Saturday. Result :- Management now want more lapsing on Saturday ! We inform our line manager that we are more than willing to take the lapsing out, but will be finishing on time so it will most likely be coming back...Result, the line managers take it... The biggest problem with lapsing is the posties themselves, tear arsing about trying to make 10 minutes whatever the cost...FFS they need to wake up !

Thanks for the replies. Looks like Moya will be getting an email then as there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer. Situation seems to be getting worse by the day.

We're not getting this choice, we're told by the DOM we must not take out all of our own duty but take lapsing instead. We are to leave whatever it takes to get the lapsing done including packets, tracked, signed for and redeliveries. Makes no sense whatsoever

Pointless to both of those especially uncle Bob which our unit rep has done numerous times to no avail.

Lets face it the union just don't

a) give a damn

b) have a clue

Too many cosy chats around the coffee table and not a scooby of an idea of how the job actually runs in 2016.
