Unfilled FT Vacancies

Post by nickbsmooth »

Our office has 3 FT vacancies, these have been covered by PT/Overtime for 2yrs now.
Am I imagining this ,but wasn't there an agreement to protect FT jobs,so I took that to be protecting the number of FT jobs.
The DOM have said the directors have to sign off any recruitment of FT positions.
I find this ridiculous you lose a FT you replace with a FT by preferably making up a PT.
Our office is now about 50% FT and I can't see this increasing.

I don't know the ins and outs of it all but I do believe they have to get "permission" from much higher up to make up FT staff. It does all seem rather stupid doesn't it. In my year and a half-ish at RM, I've seen one FT position filled, they made a PT lady up to FT...she'd been PT for 8 YEARS! Doms say they've got a few FT contracts to give out (for that one FT position filled, we've lost i think 4 or 5 FT staff in my time here) but I'm not holding my breath.

way forward agreement is clear on this if duty vacant for 6 months then shoild be filled, also if number of vacancies are above 5% then they must be filled immediately, so if either scenario exists and not being filled get your rep to lodge a disagreement over it

Our rep knows all about it, but he's far too interested in having coffee in Bournemouth to do anything about it.

go above him, he was elected to do the job if he won't give the opportunity first then simply go to area rep or branch if area rep won't help

I've honestly got no idea who our area rep is. I know that our office rep was the area rep for a time, so I assume that means he will have stepped down from being area rep to fill this position?

not necessarily he can be both an office rep and an area one, just ask him for contact details of your local branch or search for it on the cwu website

Our office has had numerous FT staff leave positions in the last 6 months and not one has been filled since, a friend was asked if he wanted FT hours as he was next on seniority about 2 months back and then heard nothing.
Management are getting PT staff to cover walks and not filling vacancies.

again if vacant over 6 months or if over 5% vacancies and not filling them then get rep to lodge disagreement

With the whole legal stuff like part time staff cant be treated differently to full time staff, with everyone needs to be treated fairly and equally how come part timers who have been on full time duties for years miss out on the full time holiday pay to me that is being treated unfairly

you may be correct on that, however the decision on how to deal with that specific issue is still at the court of appeal at the moment being sorted out.....

what will happen no one really knows for sure at moment

I believe the sticking point is the definition of voluntary overtime. You should get it for Compulsory overtime there is no argument there. But as Royal Mail overtime is technically voluntary, but expected and regular, it kind of falls in the middle of the 2 definitions. The CWU say they are discussing this with Royal Mail, but RM probably want to wait for a definitive legal ruling.

I suspect Royal Mail will want a banking of hours agreement of some sort in future

After all, you can't really argue with some staff claiming an hour of overtime on a Wednesday and then finishing half an hour early on a Saturday. The onus should really be on the manager finding work for staff to do so that they don't go home early and that they work all the hours that they are paid for. Problem is, there never seems to be a manager around when we do finish our shift, so that rarely happens.
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.
