Unpaid leave
If the DOM believes staffing will be an issue he can refuse. Worth asking though

normally unpaid leave can be refused at whim of dom, your case you may have a good chance of not only unpaid leave but possibly a little bit of paid special leave as well, depending on the reason for the stem cell donation, you may find that a refusal may be discrimination by association under the equalities act, best to contact your branch secretary for advice on how best to proceed in the event of a refusal as it has the potential to be a big deal if refused

All forms of cancer are considered a disability under the equalities act, as such it would be very very difficult for your dom to get away with refusing you time off for the reason mentioned above
