Attendance Procedure

Post by Jb1969 »

I am putting these questions out there for all to read and hopefully reply too.

Is it now a case where upon if the Attendance Procedure is exceeded an automatic Stage 1,2 or 3 is given?

Has Royal Mail completely ignored there own procedure and decided there are no mitigating circumstances bar death!?

If so, what does if anything, your local or area C.W.U Rep do to help?

Going by your posting it seems that you feel you have been harshly dealt with over an absence that has exceeded RM expected standards. The attendance procedure has informal and formal discussions built into it where an employees absence is giving cause for concern. At any of these discussions even if informal it is always best to be accompanied by a union rep to witness any notes taken. Not knowing the reason for your extended absence but if there is a connection to your absence with work then this should normally be discounted unless there are several being flagged up. If at the first stage of a formal prompt then the first line manger has at his discretion to waive the stage warning if there are mitigating circumstances but whether they have been instructed they seem to apply the stage warning irrespective of the mitigating circumstance. However if you unfortunately get to a stage 3 formal prompt where dismissal is being considered then you have the right of appeal which will be heard by an independent appeals manager and any injustice applied will come to light. This why at any stage informal or formal ensure that you are accompanied at these meetings. Even after the appeal stage you can take your complaint to an Employment Tribunal dependant on length of service (2 years or over) but you would have to weigh up the costs against the possibility of your case being successful.
