Our callers office is open till 8pm on a Wednesday and 2pm on a Saturday (obviously open rest of the week, but these days cause issues).
Wednesday our regular callers office duty finishes at 14.33, but the person that then takes over often doesn't arrive in the callers till at least 14.45 or any time after that. this often means a manager covering the callers office until that person turns up.
On Saturday's the callers office duty finishes at 13.00. There is a callers assist that finishes at 13.33, but they are really supposed to just be booking items in and helping with serving if it gets busy.
What usually happens is that the callers assist is left to serve and try and book items in (rarely possible) and a manager comes in for the last 30 mins when the assist has finished. This obviously leaves loads of items to be booked in on a Monday morning which seems unfair on the regular callers duty.
So question is what if anything can we do about management regularly doing OPG work in this way?
I should also point out that the person that often does the late shift on a Wednesday and always arrives late is our Union Rep.

If there is any opg that wants the time that the mangers are covering as ot and is unable to do so due to the managers do this work, then get the rep to lodge a stage 1 disagreement over it.
As for what work they are doing its irrelevant, it's opg work, though you may find that if fought for you may simply get an opg to cover that short space of time and not book anything in(not worth training if only covering the desk for a short while) and it will probably be permanently left till the next morning, so be careful for what you wish for

It's not so much the case that nobody would want to do it - we simply don't know the honest answer to that as nobody has really been asked.
I'm fairly certain nobody would want to do 60-75 mins OT every Saturday when everyone else has gone home for the weekend though.
This issue of Saturdays started when they moved the attendance times of the callers office duty following our revision.
The lady that normally works the callers certainly wouldn't want her hours adjusted again to finish past 14.00 on a Saturday and to be fair why should she - she never asked to have her hours changed in the first place.
We even suggested that with Sunday opening coming soon why couldn't we close at 13.00 on Saturday's and stay open till 13.00 Mon-Fri as well (currently close at 12pm except for weds 8pm), thus actually being open even longer. that suggestion was turned down.
If the callers was covered properly on a Saturday from 13.00 then the vast majority of items would get booked in by the assist, so no issue with things not getting done.
As far as lodging a stage 1 with our Rep - don't forget it's mainly him that is late on Wednesday's for his OT in the callers and if things were resolved by the stage 1 it must surely then apply to Wednesday's as well - so not sure we'd get far there.
I'd also be keen to know what if anything we can do about the staffing levels in our callers on a Saturday.
The current duty starts at 05.30 - 13.00. We open at 07.00 and it ticks over till about 10am. the caller has their break at 09.30.
From about 10am every Saturday it is mental - we have customers queuing out the door for the rest of the day and it is non-stop. The pressure put on the duty holder is unfair in my opinion. According to our DOM a risk assessment has been done - but what does this involve as we've never had anyone ask any questions in the callersand if it's just the DOM on his laptop how do we know it's being done truthfully.
In my opinion it really should be 2 people serving from 10am but what chance would we have of getting that?

Your over complicating it, keep it simple, manager is doing opg work, you want that stopped, rep should put in a disagreement if that's what the office wants regardless to his personal position on it, if he won't go above him
as to workload being too much, that's a grievance issue, I would recommend that if who ever is covering the callers office feels it is too much, they should put their concerns in writing to the dom, sent to him by recorded delivery and if not resolved in a about 2 werks then take it to a stage 1 grievance, what should happen is that the duty should get tested on a day there is issues and then manager should deal with any issues that arises

Until traffic dropped off about 6 weeks ago, we had 5 or 6 managers out delivering loops from 10am till about 5pm, so that's probably enough work for 10 staff. And this is a few months after 10 staff were given EVR.

Politely but firmly remind him that his union is running a work-to-rule industrial action. Then he'll gratefully shake your hand ("I just needed that one person - one person - to support me.") and he'll agree to stop doing it.

What time is the relief due to start? If it's 14:33,then the managers should be getting a grip,of the situation, more fool them , doing OPG work. Just shows the imbalance between managers and delivery staffMezza wrote:Our callers office is open till 8pm on a Wednesday and 2pm on a Saturday (obviously open rest of the week, but these days cause issues).
