days off grrr

why oh why do they tell you in interviewing that your days off will follow a pattern..found out this morning that only applied to people with a duty and I'm just a reserve! I did ask lino when I found out how the hell am I supposed to sort anything out and he just shrugged and walked off grrr.

So now the problem of sorting childcare in the holidays has just become a whole new bundle of hell. my Initial contract was 25hrs 5 days a week 9-2, can I just tell them seeing as I can get no advanced notice of my days off that I will only be working to those contracted hours? although it wont totally solve the childcare problem at least having same start time each day will make it easier, especially as most places around here don't even open before 8am.

oops just realised i posted this is wrong place and have no idea how to move it :d'oh!

I was a reserve for about 6 years and my day off followed a strict rota. Monday one week, tuesday next etc etc. So it can be done.

You can work your contracted hours every week if you want, it has nothing to do with them telling you your day off.

You'll be surprised how much more accommodating managers can be when you refuse to work over your contracted hours.

I have a PT reserve working on my van share while my FT partner is long term sick. They were always down for Monday/Tuesday as their day off and not allowed to work the FT hours my partner would.

After a week of the duty going out 2hrs later everyday and us both working our contracted hours, we were invited to an "informal chat" on what could be done to help the delivery be completed.

The PT Reserve now has a rotating day off to match mine, and has had his hours made up to 39 until my partner is back.

Thanks guys,
well today I was pretty much at breaking point with yet more office bs...I stayed away from Lino and just ranted to 'his friend' about me being done with the bs and come next week and the school hols I'll be doing contracted hours only as I can't arrange childcare and low and behold an hour after me leaving the DO I get a text from Lino (well I assume it's him I have no contact numbers for anyone!) telling me I'll be on same round next week and Monday is my day off...well it may not be a rotating day off but at least I'm getting notice now...baby steps and all that

im not sure how anyone with young children copes with childcare. Thankfully mine are old enough to be left for a short time. It was actually better for me when summer lapsing started as I ended up doing longer shifts but over 4 days, not working the Monday and Tuesday. This went on for 10 weeks and was great. I also don't know what I'm doing, i'll find out on Saturday what's happening next week, but in capital letters written on the rota it says 'subject to change' I seriously give up!
