hi can you tell me why the cwu aren't pushing the use of lwts etc , and you still have idiots running round with bags on there backs inc work place coaches , the area h&s rep is made aware of this is going on everyday , oh and why aren't doms being made to go out and do smat tests on this.

How much harder can they push it.

LTBs mentioning it.
Agreements making the use of designated equipment mandatory. (Albeit the Union can't enforce it only RM Can)
Posters and stickers going back years telling members to use the correct equipment.

Union can't make DOMs do anything, they can only use various processes to highlight when agreements aren't being adhered to.

Ultimately the Union can only push using mandatory equipment so far, they don't have a policing role in Royal Mail, and they can't force idiots to stop using bags on shoulders, only managers can.

I understand that but then when area reps have weekly meetings with dsms why aren't they pushing these agreements and working practises to the delivery offices , or is it just swept under the carpet like most things.

They Area and Div reps may indeed be pushing it in meeting with their RM counterparts, but they have to balance this with other matters they have to deal with, and they can only go on what members are telling them. If it is an issue then the rep needs to be told by his own members and he needs to pass on this information. But even then the managers will ignore it where they can because they get more work out of the staff. Members who refuse to use the equipment, whether through wanting an easy life from the manager, or wanting to get a runner, are just as unlikely to make an issue of it.

All in all, all 3 side, Managers, "Idiots" and the CWU want a quiet life, that has led to the current situation of LWTS lying unused in Depots.

Ultimately the only thing that is going to make someone use a LWT is WHEN they injure themselves, or strain something!

Ironically once they start using LWTs they'll probably discover that they're not that bad at all. I've always used them (apart from ridiculously small loops) and find it much easier to extract packets (and replace them when no one's in) and you can bungee larger lightweight packets to the frame. Carrying snacks & water is also easier than trying to cram it all under your armpit!

we started off with 1 LWT each a few years ago but we only have enough to cater for less than half of the postman now.

The reason managers won't crack down on it is because trollies slow you down. The last thing a manager needs is us being slowed down and going to him in the morning and saying 'I can't complete' because he then has the ballache of dealing with it!

but what does happen is when your off or on leave they put the superstar posties (start early , no m/r , no lwts ) on to make you look an idiot or lazy bastards and try and use that in there favour well they can do it ,so your discriminated against for doing the job right , hmmm.

TBT. I accept that the union cannot enforce the use of methods to be used, but you are right to point out the fact that they are MANDATORY. It is a massive failing on RM that THEY do nothing in the direction of enforcement. For reasons that are obvious to all. They use this breach of mandatory rules to their own advantage and the get of jail card is that the delivery postie who for range reason are happy to run -yes run- with trollies while a loaded bag on the shoulder. I have tried and failed miserably getting members to use methods, but, members are taking a stick to their own backs and RM managers even turn the screw further on workloads and STILL they continue. I will never understand how the pendulum has swung, and the times of job and finish is part of history. We have Failed to learn that lesson, and RM still put the boot in ! Sheer lunacy, not one of my friends can believe the stupidity of some ( many sadly) of my colleagues.

Horses for courses I suppose. We have no massive blocks of flats, although at other offices I've left a HCT outside and gone in with a bag...straight up to the top in the lift and then worked down. That worked well!

aye. and if you finish before your time they will know, so imho I reckon people will look for ways to string it out. ...i.e methods.
