Travel to another office

Hi, I've been told that as a Reserve I do not have the right to request a lift to and from the required delivery office from my own place of work. I have children who I have to drop off at their school on my way to work which makes signing in at my own place of work the only feasible option for getting in on time. Is it true that I have to make my own way to another office if requested to do so?

If you use your own car to get to your own office then its not unreasonable for them to ask you to use it to travel to another office. HOWEVER... since all travel time to another office is in your contracted hours you must have business insurance as you're travelling between units on for company business. If you only have Social, Domestic, Pleasure and Commuting insurance, you can't legally travel to another office in your own vehicle as you are uninsured. Reserve or not, it doesn't matter.

If you are working from another office, the travel time there and back is included in your duty time. Basically, you have every right to turn up to your office at your start time, then travel to the other office. Of course you are also entitled to finish AT YOUR OFFICE at your duty finish time too. If they are instructing you to go somewhere else, they should also pay Travel & Subsistence (T&S). You shouldn't be paying petrol or ware & tear on your motor when RM are the ones moving you about.

Thank you for your reply! It's very much appreciated. So I can't be made to travel directly to the other office then thus avoiding insurance disputes as my manager has told me?

No business insurance, no travel in your car in duty time. Hope it helps. :)

If you are tasked to work in another office then the PM07 agreement specifically states

CWU AND ROYAL MAIL PAY AND MODERNISATION AGREEMENT - APRIL 2007/2009 (thats in downloads

Working in nearby offices – Areas will identify and agree with the CWU locally an approach (which could include the use of volunteers and reserves) to working in nearby offices within employees’ contracted hours which will include travel times and appropriate travel and subsistence arrangements.

No specific mention of reserves so it would be illegal (yes illegal) for them to treat reserves differently.
