Bereavement leave

What is the situation regarding bereavement leave? I sadly lost my father yesterday, totally unexpected as he had not looked unwell. He was only 67. Had to get phoned while in delivery to head back to the office to go home to hear this news.

I have looked on the forum for bereavement leave but all the posts seem to be dating back to 2011.

So what am I entitled to? I'm not in work today, I phoned lino yesterday to tell him the news, he says he thinks I can get 7 days compassionate leave.

Also, I was supposed to be on 3 weeks annual leave starting from Monday - I take it I would get the first week back as it would be covered by the compassionate leave? I still think I'll take the following 2 weeks as annual leave as I need the break from work. Going off sick not an option, as I had almost been stage oned asca result of me being off following knee surgery late last year.

Sadly it could be over a week till we can arrange the funeral, as due to the sudden death the procurator fiscal may well request a post mortem. Not helped by Monday being a bank holiday.

Before any one suggest "Phone your Dom to ask" I've got enough to deal with on my plate rather than try to get in touch with dom, who would probably hurry me back into work after 1 day..

You are entitled to 1 week paid leave. My mum passed away recently so you have my sympathy also take as long as you need as we all react differently to bereavement.

I also lost my father late last year so my sincere condolences.

My father died on the Saturday before a weeks holiday I was due so they added the 7 days compassionate on top, although I wanted to. and did go back 1 day after the funeral. Everyone is different and a decent ,manager will recognise that and act accordingly I hope.

Although it is difficult I strongly recommend keeping the managers in the loop about what is happening, if you do, in this situation, they are a lot more likely to be flexible.

So sorry to hear your news I also lost my dear dad late last year I took 7 weeks off work my linos and Dom was great they even came to service take what ever time you need to very hard time

Thanks for the replies. I darent take sick leave as I was off almost 7 weeks over Xmas period due to knee surgery. I'll probably aim to goi back to work after my annual leave.

Annoyed at the delays due to things being closed over bank holiday weekend . police rekon a post mortem will need to be done due to the sudden death.

My condolences. As already said 1 week's leave. Probably best to avoid the sick if possible, depends on your office. I got a stage one for 3 week sick when one of my parents died recently, but I am a target because I don't play swallow my leader.

I lost my father end of march..After consulting my union rep I was informed that I was entitled to up to 5 days paid leave for bereavement.. You have my sympathy. All the best.

Think that is an absolute disgrace issuing a stage 1 on the bereavement of a parent your manager whoever it is should be ashamed of themselves.

Tell your rep you are entitled to 7 days compassionate leave and then take as long as you need. cannot believe some RM managers

Thanks for all the replies.

Now on 2 weeks annual leave, my fathers funeral is on wednesday this week. Not looking forward to it at all.

Lost my mum on Sunday morning past for the next 5 days after was on holidays can I claim back that week or at present time what special leave do u get for a parent passing I was also her next of kin

Not sure about claming week back. but take as long as you need as i've said before we all react differently to bereavement.all my sympathy it' a very hard time.

You are entitled to a week off for the death of a parent you don’t lose that just because you are on leave

My father died when I was on leave, I rang my manager and explained and then as I was arranging everything I asked for and got Compassionate leave for the week after.

Of course, you have my deepest condolences.
