Non drivers

Does anybody think that there will come a time when Royal Mail will demand that everybody currently employed with them will need to have a full driving license?
I know that new entrants have to have one now when joining, but there are a few in my office, including me who don't drive and doesn't have any intention to learn to. I assume there is nothing in the contracts of those who have been in Royal Mail for a long time saying the company can force you into learning to drive?

they certainly wont pay to put anyone through their driving test (although they used to years ago) and they certainly cant force you to take it at your expense.

When I applied, it specified in the job description that a licence was required

And why do non drivers get the same pay as drivers?Doesnt seem fair to me.

Most drivers loops in my office are shorter. But really, it's not like being the driver is any harder. And what about those of us who get shifted from duty to duty?

It's not like being the driver is any harder but we've ourselves paid for a skill that Royal Mail needs and during the working day are at risk of prosecution for road traffic offences and points on our license that could increase the cost of insurance.

And non-drivers sharing a van could ask themselves whether they would rather be out on their own pushing a high capacity trolley.
