Van sharing duty using one part timer and one full timer
Hello, I'm hoping that someone will be able to explain a problem that I'm trying to work out: One of the duties I cover in my DO is a van-share duty. I have a part-time contract and sometimes I'm working with a full-timer. For example, on a Tuesday and a Saturday I am paid till 14.20 but a full-timer is paid until 15.00. Because I have a later start I am entitled to a 30 minute break but the full-timer is entitled to a 40 minute break. The duty is a van-share so it is set-up so that we both finish our sections at roughly the same time. To me this seems to discriminate against the part-timer. Am I missing something? Thanks.

Thanks Jpro747, although I understand why different break times are given - that makes sense. But, how can you have two members of staff getting into one van at the same time at the start of deliveries and leaving the van at the same time at the end of deliveries when one is getting paid till 14.20 and the other is getting paid till 15.00?

Full timer should be starting 40 mins earlier, or part timer 40 mins later. This has happened to me as a full timer & I had to do extra work after doing can share.

Some van shares are well planned, and work well once you're out on the ground. The difference in time is normally made up with "Indoor" work. Often the FTer will throw off your Mech & Households, or perhaps he has to do ISP or packet sorting.
In theory you should both get out to your van at the same time. Not sure how the different Meal Reliefs are meant to work, I presume the Fter's meant to take 10 mins sometime during his indoor work?
We don't have that problem as a lot of our Muppets don't bother taking their MRs (or even claim for them)! You just can't train Stupid!

Thanks Dorset Plodder. Yes you're right the FTer starts at 07.00 and throws both duties in. I then start at 08.30. At this point we are both ready to bag-up our mail and head out. At this point the FTer has been paid to do all the prep work. That's okay and fair. We then both go out in a van and deliver all the mail. So we are both paid for that. But, say we get back to the DO at 14.20. Well that's okay cause that's the end of my paid duty. But the FTer is paid till 15.00. If they are not given work to do in the DO, and just get to go home, then they get 40 minutes pay (14.20 to 15.00) for doing nothing. So the shared van duty between a PTer and a FTer discriminates the PTer on short days (Tuesday and Saturday). Is this starting to make any sense?

Surely this doesn't benefit the business at all. The business is losing out on some work time that the full timer could be doing instead of dropping the part timer off instead...

DB1100 you make a good point. Management deem this to be possible. But as you and I know lots of staff work for free. My DO has many old timers who come in to work early, every single day, and they stay late on Saturday prep'n D2Ds for the following week. Since January I have only been doing paid work (starting on time and prep'n D2Ds only if I have time during my duty or get agreed overtime pay). These are not small duties. Mine has close to 600 drops (from memory), not including the lapsing. But until all staff do what I do then management will exploit this gift. This still doesn't answer my question though.

The simple answer is you should both have the same finish time.Reallywheelie wrote: This still doesn't answer my question though.
To find your respective start times you subtract your contracted hours from the finish time.
It isn't rocket science.
If you have different finish times it means the planner was an idiot. The manager is an idiot. And any union bod with any responsibility for overseeing the implementation of the revision was either fast asleep or an idiot.

Our office has a similar situation, although not such a big gap as yourselves. As long as you claim when you go over its not such a big deal although agree the full-timer usually gains by end of week. The question you should be asking though is how does the lapsing work. In theory you can refuse or take a lot less than you're partner after all they can't enforce overtime.
