Manager trying to get me in whilst im ill
Hi all
I called in sick on thursday due to illness and energy loss, friday is my day off, tomorrow the manager has asked me to get in for a interview but if im feeling anything like today i wont make it out the house without feeling sick. I said to the manager today i dont know if i will get in tomorrow due to my wife having the car, work is 14 miles away and public transport takes at least an hour to travel, the manager said he will get me a taxi too the office but i think the travelling will make me sick, another problem is next week im on holiday :-( Help please???

No need to do this self-certify on return (up to a week) and don't be bullied. If you are ill you are too ill to travel into work for a meaningless interview. Have it on your return when you are fit and well.xtreme0964 wrote:Hi all

Maybe theyll be willing to do an interview over the phone. I was really ill between Xmas and new years eve 2014,the manager wanted me to go in,they obviously thought I was bullsh*tting being that time of the year. Next day another manager who was just providing cover phoned me to say he appreciated I lived 15miles away and would do the interview over the phone,a reasonable approach.

Its part of the attendance procedure that you set up contact with RM but you have given to the manager your reason for not attending for work on Saturday is you don't have transport which the manager has responded by providing you with transport rather than you still being ill and unfit to cover your duty. Suggest you contact manger before a taxi is sent to you advising him that you have not recovered to attend work and put the onus on him for a home visit. Furthermore as you are on holiday the following week you will have to make contact to confirm you are off sick and on holiday as your days of absence will continue unless you give your manager this information.xtreme0964 wrote:Hi all

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Your biggest mistake was mentioning your wife has the car. That has just confused a simple matter.xtreme0964 wrote:Hi all

When they asked you to go in, the simple and only thing you should have said is that you are too ill to get to work and you'll be in touch when you are well enough to get in. End of conversation. No need for excuses.
You're either ill or you are not. Say g you can't get in because the wife has the car seems like you are ok to go in work but have no transport.

Fed up of reading things like this.
The Official procedure is you need to keep regualar agreed contact minimum every 7 days by an agreed means,Phone call,Text or email.
For longer a face to face meeting should be held on the 28th day or around.
You do not have to agree to a face to face meeting after such a short period and speak to your rep.

Long term absence
This applies when an employee is absent
from work for more than 14 days. It can also
apply when repeated absences are due to
a significant underlying health issue. The aim
is to enable a return to normal work activities
at the earliest opportunity or, if that is not
possible, to find an alternative outcome.
Contact between the absent employee and the
manager will have been established during the
first two weeks of the absence. It is vital that
this continues as the absence extends
beyond 14 days. Contact should normally
be weekly.
Involvement of the relevant CWU representative
can be helpful in maintaining contact and to
resolving cases promptly: it is recognised that
early resolution is beneficial to employees’ well
being. With the agreement of the employee,
the CWU representative should be involved in
absence review meetings and other activity
intended to facilitate an early return to work.
Long term absence
review meetings
At specific points in an ongoing absence, the
manager will meet with the employee and,
if the employee wishes, their representative
to review the situation and clarify the next
steps. The employee will be encouraged
and supported to return to work as soon as
practicable. A return to work plan will be agreed
with the objective of enabling a return to full
duties as quickly as possible. This may include
short term work modifications when these are
necessary and will normally last for between
one and four weeks, but may continue beyond
this period where appropriate. The employee’s
progress will be monitored by the manager and
discussed with the employee and where the
employee wishes their representative.
To achieve timely resolution both Royal Mail
and CWU aim to see absences resolved in line
with these timescales:
Day 28 review
• By this stage of the absence the employee
and manager should have met face to face,
if at all possible. Discussion should focus on
any support that can be provided to help a
return to work as early as possible. If not
completed earlier, a referral for Occupational
Health advice should normally be arranged
at this point, unless an early return to

My manager tried doing the same to me. He even put in the letter that if i didn't attend he would consider stopping my wages. I'm glad that he put that in writing because i took out a grievance against him and won. These managers think they can make up their own rules.

I remember having a broken leg wasn't a good enough excuse to not come in and do light duties. He also threatened my wages for failure to attend an interview. Needless to say, my wage slip was completely unaffected. ;)

Just send them a text in the morning letting them know your situation, keep it extremely simple for example: "unable to work today due to ill health" nothing more. Why does it matter what condition you have? If you can't work then you can't work, surely that's all they need to know. They can go through the details at a later stage during the return to work interview. If they want to phone and talk, I don't see a problem with just not picking up the phone. If they keep trying I would send them a text message stating "I do not wish to be harassed while I am recovering from illness, I will contact you when I am ready to return to work", if that doesn't work just block their number

it matters what condition you have as they have to staff the office.
If you have the trots or a sniffle your more than likely to be only off a day or so, if you have broken a bone or developed flesh eating disorder
