In Italy they're going down to an alternate days service... will this happen to us?

I keep an eye on the Italian equivalent of RMC just out of curiosity, and today I noticed a post saying:

Today I heard that there was a business communication saying due to staff shortage (can't they recruit??) we'll be lapsing until October, which is when the alternate days service kicks in.

I did a bit of digging and found out that in Italy, from October they'll only deliver on Monday, Wednesday and Friday one week, and Tuesday and Thursday the next week... no Saturday service at all.

Our Universal Service obligation must run out soon... will this happen to us? That would surely mean cutting half the workforce?

My brother works for New Zealand post and they already do this. Think they still work 6 days a week, 3 days on one walk, the other 3 days on another walk, alternate days on each walk. No sign of this happening here in the near future but who knows how things will be in 10 years time.

However, as New Zealanders do more online, they’re sending fewer letters. Today our Posties deliver half the number of letters they used to. So, we’re changing the way we deliver standard mail.

From July 2015, each street address in major towns and cities will receive standard mail delivery either on Monday, Wednesday and Friday or on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday.

What’s staying the same is our delivery target. We aim to deliver at least 95% of standard mail within three working days, and urgent courier packages overnight, just like always. Priority items (like FastPost) will be delivered every day, just as they are now, so keep checking your letterbox Monday to Saturday for your letters and parcels.

TNT deliver on alternate days in Holland. I wouldn't be surprised if it happens here too at some point.

The Postal Services Act in 2011 and 2012 ensured Royal Mail is the designated provider of the USO until at least 2021.


So I am hoping that we still have the USO for another five years as it essentially protects our jobs. The 'one price goes anywhere' might be under threat somewhere in the future, but then again, people thought that years ago, so who knows?

It'll happen. Royal Mail will make the argument that in order to keep prices low the USO has to be restructured. That's what happened in Holland.

If the conservatives are in power come 2020 you can wave goodbye to the 6 day a week USO.
