Marriage Allowance Tax Relief- worth a read

Post by IcanthelpthewayIam »

last year the government brought in new rules to allow a low paid worker/unemployed to transfer upto £1060 of their tax allowance to their spouse, so basically if your partner is a non tax payer and you are a tax payer, or vice versa(part time postie and not paying tax but partner does in their job) then you can do this transfer and it can save you upto £212 per year, you can claim for the tax year 2015/2016 now and once its done it is added to your tax code until you tell hmrc otherwise

you will need both yours and your partners p60 from last year (easier with these there are other options though)

You need to be married or in a civil partnership with the person you are doing the transfer with

go to this web page and fill in the details, takes about 10 minutes and thats it:

Did this three weeks ago.
I've had notification of new codes, but no money yet. :cuppa :cuppa
Just need to point out that the application needs to made out in the name of the LOWER tax payer in order to donate their unused allowance.

it can be backdated to April 2015, the cut off applies to getting it paid back in one go last year, its now added to this years amount and spread over the year

I had a look at that as my partner earns under, she does though do overtime. Obviously if she gives me part of her allowance she could easily go over her new reduced allowance. We decided to leave it as it is.

doesn't matter if she ends up paying tax, as the amount of combined tax you both would pay would have been the exact same amount as if you hadn't done the transfer,

Handy tip!

Shame it does not apply to common law partnerships after being together X amount of time.
