night senority???

my mates office is having a resign on the night shift, now he has done over 40 years, but is being told, that because people have been on nights longer than him( he has done nights for only 5 years)they have seniority over him, is this right??? apparently its in the way forward agreement!!! anybody shed some light on this???

apparently, as they are paid allowances, such as night allowance, sunday allowance and these are protected for three years, should they be knocked off, it would mean royal mail would have to pay two night allowances, when only one person is doing the night shift if you follow me, it sounds unfair to me, but there you go!!!

Nights are not going into our new re-pick,the reason given is that night workers get the "night allowance" and if any of them lose their duty RM will still have to pay this for a year....I say that ALL duties should be in the re-pick.

allowances may come into it but you said both are on nights so the allowance would need to be paid regardless of which one the 2 come off nights

If they are both on nights already, then it's seniority, doesn't matter how long they've been on nights, as pointed out RM have to pay their night allowance for 3 years

maybe, they accrue different allowances??? my mate does 4 nights, maybe they do 5 and that's the reason for it, he will drop to third bottom out of twenty because of this, doesn't seem fair to me!!!

It's in the MTSF agreement. It's those that have received the shift allowance for the least amount of time that will be first to be displaced, not those with the least overall seniority.

Why?
If they are both getting the same allowances, whoever loses their duty will get paid 3 years night allowance

At our place it's a complete mess. Pompey distribution drivers have been put into "bubbles" for the repick for SOMC. The bubbles are based on which shift you do, then the repick is based on length of time on that shift. However, some people are saying that if there are less duties than people in a bubble then overall length of service will come into it

The section you are looking for is Pay Protection Resourcing which is in the Pay and Major Change Agreement which introduced amongst other things one delivery in 2003. It is on page 25, 26 and details how you perform a resign when people have pensionable allowances.

The principle is that Royal Mail does not allow someone who is not in receipt of an higher pensionable allowance to sign for one which will result in the new person attracting the new allowance at the same time as paying pay protection to the person who is losing the pensionable allowance. On nights there are night allowance plus night allowance with Sunday pensionable supplement which are different allowance amounts. .

It is not true everyone gets protected for 3 years, the fact is the length of protection get is based on how long you have done on the shift.

if you have done only 6 months in receipt of the shift payment you receive no pay protection
If you have done between 6 and 12 months you receive 17 weeks
if you have done between 12 &18 months you get 34 weeks
if you have done 18&24 months you get 1 year
If you have done 24-36 months you get 1 year 17 weeks
If you done over 36 months you get 3 years.
