Election material and Opt Outs

My parents opted out of unaddressed mail (aka D2D) a few years ago and one of the posties told her that they have to deliver the election bumpf that the candidates come into the office and put into the frames themselves.

Now... I've never seen a candidate doing that anyway but if they did, why doesn't the opt out still apply?

The opt out never applied to election material, only the random crap.

All Election material is covered by the People Representative ACT and there is legal entitlement and obligation on Royal Mail to delivery to all the addresses impacted by local , regional or National Elections. Therefore there is no opt out !

I did say that to Mum actually but I think then the 'candidates putting it into the frame themselves' bit threw me a little.

Bit shite that you can't opt out of that as well.

Why can't people who join the parties deliver this bumf themselves? It really annoys me when you're walking round with piles of it and see some folk ahead of you putting leaflets through the doors too.

Why can't everyone who posts a letter just deliver it themselves? Think how easy your job would be then...

There's probably no small number of people around the country that would like to "opt out" of receiving their credit card statements and utility bills?

Yeah but she's written again since to say that she doesn't want them as they started to appear again while our regular postie was off sick and we weren't sure whether it had expired or not.

RM completely ignored my request- I sent them an email requesting the form to be sent out as I didn't have access to a printer at the time (still don't at home since the latest toddler related incident...), and they replied saying "here's the form to print off". So I sent another email reiterating that I'd like them to post the form out to me and they never bothered to reply after that.

If you wish to opt out of receiving Door to Door mail items please send us your name and address details to the address below or dowload a copy of the form [English version Opens in new window | Welsh version Opens in new window ]:
Freepost ROYAL MAIL CUSTOMER SERVICES
or email your name and address to us at: optout@royalmail.com
We will then send an opt-out form to your address, which you must sign and return. We do this for security reasons - to verify that those resident at the address have requested the ‘opt out’.
Once you’ve returned this form, Royal Mail will stop delivering unaddressed items to your address within six weeks.
The opt-out will last for a period of two years from the date that we have received your opt-out form. If you wish to continue your opt-out after the two-year period you can do so by completing a new opt-out form which can be obtained by contacting us via email at optout@royalmail.com or via telephone on 0345 266 0858, or at the address above.

Does the opt out apply to the address or to the person?
If I moved 1 year after taking the opt out option, would it follow me to my new address or would the option remain in place for the new owners even if they hadn't requested it?

It's for the address registered if you move, and even if you put in a redirection, the new DO/Duty won't know about the Opt Out, so you would have to put a new one in.

Yep, I did that and that's how I ended up with the email back saying "here's the form". I sent another email and nothing received. Buggers. :D
