MRM.COM: Operations plan: Your role in delivering our future

Last week, at the annual Operations Conference, our chief operations officer Sue Whalley shared this year’s Operations Plan.
The Operations Plan is a significant investment in our business and our road map. We are investing about £180million in operations this year.
Sue said: ‘We need to be more competitive with even better quality. We need to be more efficient, which means reducing cost to price competitively. Being more competitive means we can retain more existing business and win new customers.’
What we need to deliver
We aim to be more relevant to our customers, to win in parcels and to secure the future of letters. Initiatives such as longer opening hours, barcode scanning, and better revenue protection will help us to do this.
The targets will be delivered by maintaining a safe and efficient pipeline, engaging with our people, and being data driven.
Your role
We all have an impact on the customer experience. To get it right first time, every time, there are some simple steps you can take:
Scan all barcodes in processing and on delivery
Always attempt delivery and complete ‘Something for You’ and ‘With your Neighbour’ cards
Always hand stray paperwork to Revenue Protection or your manager
Cancel stamps in mail centres and on delivery
Keep vehicles and enquiry offices clean and tidy – they represent our brand
Treat your colleagues as you would like to be treated

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

I understand 1 and 2 but what does "being data driven" actually mean?

£180 million?? Wonder where it's going to....
New PDAs? new callers offices? Bigger workstations? More full-time redundancy pay-offs? Not necessarily in that order!!

On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

If getting a pen out and scoring through a stamp takes so long then so be it and go over your time. But in reality the amount of uncancelled stamps on a residential walk is minimal since most stuff is either franked, PPI or DSA and most of the letters with stamps have them cancelled properly (apart from flats).Stunl3y wrote:Cancel stamps in mail centres and on delivery

It's just working for free because someone can go on and reuse that stamp. And as an employee and probably a shareholder you should probably take at least some interest in the business's finances. People buying stamps rather than reusing them is what keeps us all in a job.

I don't work in a mail centre, but at Christmas time we were expected to cancel stamps in the DO ourselves. Doesn't take long... Scanning every item also shouldn't take long...that is, if the bloody PDAs behave themselves and the barcodes are printed properly!

As an employee of 28 years I remember when stamps were franked, every stamp , now I could spend all day marking stamps especially when doing inward sorting, im not quite sure where you get the impression most stamps are franked because they are certainly not any more. As an employee and a shareholder Im actually concerned that the relevant machines are now not doing this and postmen are being asked to do it with a biro when they could be delivering mail.JP1 wrote:If getting a pen out and scoring through a stamp takes so long then so be it and go over your time.
